AMD 965 Overclock help wanted (My First)

Thread Starter
Hello. My goal is to stabilize a 4GHz 24/7 overclock of my AMD 965.

The attached photos show the best i have been able to accomplish (after some reading). My current settings (as shown) are stable for only 45 seconds testing 3 (not 4) cores using Prime 95, resulting in a BSOD crash.

I have read some about increasing the VID voltage to increase stability yet I cannot find this setting in my bios. Only in AMD Overdrive do I find a means to set this manually.

May I please have your help?

Here are my other systems specs.

CPU
AMD Phenom II X4 965 27 °C
Deneb 45nm Technology
RAM
8.00 GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 669MHz (9-9-9-24)
Motherboard
MICRO-STAR INTERNATIONAL CO.,LTD 790GX-G65 (MS-7576) (CPU1) 27 °C
Graphics
S230HL (1920x1080@60Hz)
1280MB GeForce GTX 470 (nVidia) 44 °C

doh.gif: At first glance that motherboard looks good..but it's not..
Looks like 3+1 phase..NOT good for overclocking a high tdp chip like 965 black
tbh..i'd stick around 3.8 with as low of volts as possible until you get a better motherboard if I was you.
As for the how-to..Here's the best AMD guide on the interwebs..do everything in order typer.gif

I bet your mobo suddenly reboots with no warning or bluescreen.

Would you elaborate a bit? I don't understand the significance of 3+1 Phase, tdp and tbh.

If it's my motherboard that limits me... well, I"ll experiment, have fun, and maybe upgrade when I absolutely have to.

I'll read the manual you suggested, follow instructions, and post my results.

Thanks!smile.gif

Regardless of phase count you should avoid oc on this board as all MSI low end AMD boards have very high VRM failure rates! I.e. blowing up!
Read the link in my sig About VRMs and MOSFETS

Okay. Any recommendations for an inexpensive motherboard?

Also, What is VRM?

Go to my sig and read what's in the link.
Budget?

Sorry I asked what VRM meant when you previously stated "Look in my sig..." I'm tired, and didn't feel like reading is guess.

My budget is under $100 for a replacement mboard since I'm just overclocking for fun. . More than that... I'd just save my pennies and go for a full system overhaul in a year. I can wait.

I'm catching up on internet articles and feedback about this board and find it hard to believe that I have been unscathed for almost 2 years.
