create multiple textboxs user input.

post #1 of 16

Hello everyone,

I'm working on my graduation project in college and I need some help in PHP and HTML.

I have created two textbox in my page one that says Rows and Columns. when the user for example input a 10 in row filed and 5 in column filed and submit I want to create 10 textboxs in row and 5 textbox in column.

how can I do that?

I thought I would use for loop in php and put html code there but I was sooo wrong. apparently I can't place html code in PHP section thumbsdownsmileyanim.gif who knew.

Code:
    <table>
<?php
    for ($i = 0; $i < $rows; $i++) {
?>
        <tr>
<?php
        for ($j = 0; $j < $cols; $j++) {
?>
            <td></td>
<?php
        }
?>
        </tr>
<?php
    }
?>
    </table>

There's plenty of ways to do it, this just illustrates a variant of the "use for loop in php and put html code there" scenario.

EDIT: heh, 2.5 days late. whoops.

EDIT 2: Graduation Project? For college? Holy crap. You would be curled up in a corner if you saw the 1000's of lines of code I've written for my software engineering project, and I just consider that a learning experience for what I plan to do for my graduation project. wink.gif

Thanks for your help. I used java script. But I'll also try your way.

Well your lucky. I wish I had to write 1000's of line of code for my graduation project but my college is a peace of crap.

Anyways I did write a 2d game and its map editor in c++ and opengl. It was about 5000-6000 line of code. I really really enjoyed writing that game And that was even before going to college.

Now I'm trying to write a 3d game also in c++ and opengl.

[Added}
I forgot to tell you about my graduation project tongue.gif I'm making a full college registration system where students can view their marks online and professors can add and edit the students marks. also I'm making a wiki for students so they can add the lecture notes there. also I might do a forum, but the forum will be ready made I'll just have to install it in my system.

right now I'm using HTML, PHP, SQL, Java script, and css. I had to learn all of them in a month since my crapy college did not teach us any of them. to make my life even worst the two idiots who are suppose to work with me on the project are playing COD 24/7 and not doing any work. we three suppose to work on the project but its only me who is doing all the work . I'm doing the programing, analysis and design and they are playing COD madsmiley.png

now I have one more reason to hate Activation.

Ahhh I see. You can imagine I was a little surprised by the level 1 PHP question, but you're not new to coding, just web dev. That's cool. Feel free to shout if you run into any more hangups. I'm just learning like you, but I have a pretty good handle on PHP.

PHP can be a pretty powerful tool actually, once you get past some of its more glaring idiosyncrasies. I do prefer it to AJAX for server side stuff, but that could just be due to my crazy weak JavaScript.

On the subject of table displays, should you find JavaScript isn't doing what you need down the line:

One of PHP's more interesting basic tools that (as far as I know) the C languages lack is foreach. Since tabular data is often driven by arrays, foreach is generally the preferred method to display them with PHP. Short version is you don't need to check arrays sizes or monitor iterations, you just hand foreach the array you want to traverse and it handles the rest. It handles keyed values as well. Its pretty handy for doing things like translating database object data sets returned by your queries.

Syntax:
Code:
<?php
     foreach ($array AS $value) {
          echo $value;
     }
or
     foreach ($array AS $key => $value) {
          echo $key . ' => ' . $value;
     }
?>

More information on foreach here: http://php.net/manual/en/control-structures.foreach.php (the official site is actually a pretty great resource. The native search is pretty good, but 90% of the time I just pre-pend whatever I'm trying to look for in google with "php " and the official docs pop in the first couple hits).

I'm sorry, what?

PHP is an interpreted server-side language. AJAX is not a language at all, in fact, it's just JavaScript using an object that allows you to submit asynchronously in the background. 99% of the time, your Ajax is still calling a script on the server, be it PHP or ASP.NET.

AJAX IS JavaScript, and unless you're passing things to a flat text file or something, you still need server logic. So your post just confuses me a little bit. I could just be reading it wrong. I'm bored sitting here waiting for my car to be serviced. frown.gif

Plex,
Tampa Eh? Howdy neighbor. smile.gif

When I said "PHP can be a pretty powerful tool I do prefer to AJAX for server side stuff, but that could just be due to my crazy weak JavaScript." I meant pretty much just that.

When I want to do things server side, I prefer to use PHP, possibly due to my weakness (lack of study as of yet) with JavaScript. AJAX being an alternative tool through which JavaScript can be used to work on the server side. I certainly have no issues with AJAX, and in fact I would like to get more fluent in JavaScript so that I can utilize it to do things that PHP really can't do.

I referenced the two (three) since the original poster asked for PHP help, then said they found a JavaScript solution, then went on to describe a project that will likely require server side logic.

I realize AJAX is not a language in and of itself, which is why the sentence in question was referencing PHP as a "tool" not specifically as a language. I probably could have been more clear on the comparison though. Thanks for the clarification.

EDIT: I am still a student, so if I'm missing something obvious please point me in the right direction. I think I have a pretty good handle on this topic, but its entirely possible I'm confused somewhere.
