Mid-range oc mobo- what to get?

Thread Starter
Hey there all, this is my first real post so here goes....

I am looking for a new motherboard that costs between Us$140-$170 (witha litle leeway). It needs to be socket 775 intel. Dont be fooled by the old DDR400 ram on my specs, I wil be upgrading to DDR2 along with the mobo.
I dont need on board graphics.
It needs to be dual-core compatible as I will be upgrading to a core 2 once i've over-thrashed my Pentium 4!
Right now I'm lookiong at the Gigabyte 965P-DS3
or the Gigabyte 965P-DS4
or the ASUS P5B (Deluxe???)

Which one do you experts think is best for overclocking and has the best value?? Any other mobo suggestions are very welcome.

I have heard wonderful things about both of those boards, I think you would be happy either way you go. Chozart would be able to help you out more though, I have never oc'ed an intel.

who me?

All three will be good for overclocking.
  • Gigabyte 965P-DS3 lacks RAID on the southbridge; only RAID on the secondary controller over the PCI bus. Thus, if you want RAID, this one is not your best choice.
  • Gigabyte 965P-DS4 does support RAID on the southbridge (ICH8R) and is a very good overall board.
  • ASUS P5B also lacks RAID on the southbridge; setting up RAID on the secondary controller is cumbersome to say the least (since one port is external)
  • ASUS P5B-E does upport RAID on the southbridge
  • ASUS P5B Deluxe is the top dog. Best overclocker, 8-phase power, which provides more stability.
However, any of these boards show good overclocks. Not many reports on the DS4, since that board is not available in the US.

Check here: http://www.overclock.net/intel-cpus/...clock+database
You'll see that the P5B Deluxe and the Gigabyte P965 DS3 perform very well, esp. with the lower multi CPUs (where the motherboard matters even more).

If you are considering to go dual graphics at some point, then there are other motherboards you might consider... but I am guessing that's not the case.

finally, given your choices, I assume you're going Core 2 Duo?

Thanks chozart, yes i willbe upgrading to core 2 duo, probably E6600.

Mikey44 I am afraid I would lie to get a bit more experience with the forum and get to know more people before I start making prive part trades. Buying off you would also be rather complicated as I lave in New Zealand and you live in the U.S!!

thanks 4 help

I think you should get this if it can fit in your price range.

140-150 usd....so is that like 250nzd approx? Where in NZ are you. I've bought all of my components from that store in the link above and they're very trust worthy and competitively priced.
