AMD was with holding stock. It was evidenced by the fact that as soon as the GTX 680 was released and there was a massive shortage of cards, suddenly every retailer was overflowing with HD 7xxx cards. Before the GTX 680 release, e-tailers were selling out of stock on a regular basis. It's the law of supply-and-demand; if there is not enough supply to meet demand, prices go up. As soon as that demand shifts away, prices go back down. Since there was a massive shortage of GTX 680s, AMD seized the opportunity to get people that were "on the fence" about which card to get. Some people didn't want to wait for GTX 680's to come into stock, so AMD made a sale on a card that is more expensive simply because it was in stock.

AMD played quite the game this generation. Don't point fingers at either company. Neither of them are to be trusted.

It's been said, but to reiterate, its probably the dual GTX 680 card. I'm 99.9% sure that NVIDIA isn't stupid enough to release another "high-end single GPU" since AMD hasn't come out with anything to overtake the 680.

For a start, AMD had a soft launch, the cards "launched" in December........didn't see any hit shelves til January. GTX680 was hard launch only.

Secondly, two different architectures, two different requirements. TSMC and Nvidia have both admitted to low yields from TSMC's 28nm fab. Not to mention that when the 7970 launched it too was out of stock most of the time rolleyes.gif

Thirdly, 7970 has been out for 3 months now, sales start slowing, hence the price cut they just gave. They felt the pressure from Nvidia and will drop the price to start shipping more units.

So the 7970 having more units at retail can't be directly compared to Nvidia's lack of units. Also have to remember the 680 only launch like what, 3 weeks ago? So 3 months vs 3 weeks......hmmm......I wonder why AMD have more units on shelves rolleyes.gif

I think I see heatsink fins, or just a really, really, really ugly case.

I hope its the 690 and not something lame like a 670.
