Benchmarks I've seen, the 7870 beats the 7950 in some games and is close to it in most.
Wait what?! Why would the little brother beat the 7950, I mean how?! Please dont even say with a good big overclock cause then we can just overclock the 7950 thus taking it out of its league again and not to mention the 7950 is a great overclocker. Again silly to buy a 7870 atm when for $40 more you can grab a 7950.

It's really close.

I think the reason that the 7870 beats or equals the 7950 in a lot of situations is because the 7950s vram isn't required, so the 1 ghz core clock that the 7870 has beats the 800mhz core clock of the 7950.

Dude you are so wrong. check out this Sapphire HD 7950 OC at USD 399.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102963

These cards can do 950 - 1000 Mhz easily on stock voltage. At those speeds they get close to HD 7970 perf. Look at the most demanding games like Alan Wake, Metro 2033, Crysis Warhead, Crysis 2 (DX11 Ultra with high res textures) , Batman Arkham city (DX11 maxed out),Battlefield 3 . Games which run well at 60+ fps at 2560 x 1600 aren't what matter. The HD 7950 is 20 - 30% faster and the gap is more if both cards are OC'd given the larger OC headrom on HD 7950.( HD 7950 OC cards can do 1.1 - 1.2 Ghz with extra voltage).

Crysis 2 - 25% faster

HD 7870 @1000/4800
http://www.guru3d.com/article/amd-ra...7870-review/19

Alan Wake - HD 7950@900 Mhz will be around 54 fps(20% faster) at 1080p max settings

HD 7950 @800/5000 , HD 7870 @ 1000/4800
http://www.hardware.fr/articles/857-...alan-wake.html

Metro 2033 - 40% faster

HD 7870 @1000/4800
http://www.guru3d.com/article/amd-ra...7870-review/16

Crysis Warhead - 30% faster at 1080p , more at 1600p

HD 7950 @900/5000

HD 7870 @1000/4800
http://www.anandtech.com/show/5625/a...hern-islands/5

Batman Arkham City - 30% faster at 1080p , more at 1600p

HD 7950 @900/5000
http://www.anandtech.com/show/5476/a...7950-review/10
HD 7870 @1000/4800
http://www.anandtech.com/show/5625/a...hern-islands/9

Battlefield 3 - 15 - 20% faster
HD 7950 @880/5000
http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Powercolor/HD_7950_PCS_Plus/8.html
HD7870 @1000/5000
http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/AMD/HD_7850_HD_7870/8.html

Right now the HD 7870 is not a good deal .If you are willing to push the Sapphire HD 7950 OC to 1.2 Ghz with extra voltage this card will give you better than GTX 680 performance for 100 bucks lesser. If you want HD 7870 wait for it to get to a price of USD 279 - 299.

What he's referring to are examples such as these: http://www.anandtech.com/show/5625/amd-radeon-hd-7870-ghz-edition-radeon-hd-7850-review-rounding-out-southern-islands/13 , http://www.guru3d.com/article/amd-radeon-hd-7850-and-7870-review/17 ,http://www.anandtech.com/show/5625/amd-radeon-hd-7870-ghz-edition-radeon-hd-7850-review-rounding-out-southern-islands/11 , http://www.anandtech.com/show/5625/amd-radeon-hd-7870-ghz-edition-radeon-hd-7850-review-rounding-out-southern-islands/14 where the performance is either the same or within a couple of frames. So, basically, if you are a heavy skyrim, battlefield (yes, the resolution and settings are a key factor, but still), dirt 3 or civ 5 player, you can get the same performance, with a really good non-reference cooler, for $100 cheaper than a reference 7950. BTW, I'm Australian, and what I'm referencing are these: http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=193_1372&products_id=19778 & http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=193_1311&products_id=19508

Newegg has a HIS and Power Color 7950 for $380. This would have to be at least $60 cheaper to be worth it.
