$2.7 billion net income, that's only 1/5th of the revenue.

That's nothing.

So I'm not allowed an opinion? And I think you misinterpreted what I posted. I'm not saying they should donate more or that they're being uncharitable (that's what your point a) and b) were about right?), I'm saying who other then intel can do what intel can do? Intel is on the forefront of groups advancing computer hardware technology. Personally I would much rather they spend every penny of profit making better chips. Advancing the prosperity of our whole species. Rather then throwing it into the wind trying to fix global hunger or some crap. But that's just my opinion (you know, something we all have), I see nothing wrong with them doing whatever they wish to do with their profits.

Let trash corporations like wal-mart or oil companies who do absolutely nothing to advance our shared prosperity as a species donate some of their obscene profits.

That's actually a lot.

Take a look at retail. 20 billion in revenue can wind up to 200m in net income.

20% GP is pretty nice. Although keep in mind, this is lower than expected results, causing their stock price to drop 2%.

How this became a world hunger thread is beyond me. Now where people get off telling OTHER PEOPLE to do with THEIR money and then blaming them when they don't is an ass hole move. You have no room to tell other people what they should do with their money, and if you cared so much donate your paycheck but don't ***** at someone else for not doing so too.

IBM can do what intel does... about 10x over.

Or if you were speaking from a purely driving technology standpoint

Apple, Microsoft, AMD, IBM, Samsung, nVidia, and about 10 dozen others.

I'll rephrase then: Who other then intel (and amd heh) Is doing what intel is doing? If intel fell by the wayside in the coming years and stopped advancing cpu technology could IBM step up and drive further advances? Probably. Would they? They arn't now (we don't see IBM cpu's in our computers, just Intel and AMD)... but I dunno enough specifics about em to speculate.

You're right about AMD, they are a driving force in the market the same as intel.

I don't think Apple or microsoft could or would get into the hardware end of things. That's not their market. Apple hardware is other peoples products assembled and rebranded apple, and microsofts are the same. I don't think either of them do any research on actual technology in the hardware side of things do they?

Samsung has a completely different focus... I dunno though, could they branch out into the cpu field?

So I do see your point biggrin.gif, intel isn't indispensable and if they disappeared tomorrow others would step in to fill the void. However intel (and amd) are the people there now doing the work. I would be best pleased if they focused on it thumb.gif , and I think the world is best served by this as well.
