Need 7970 advice!

Thread Starter
So with the three for free thing going on I am going to buy a 7970 because it is the obvious value compared to a 680.

I have a Gene V in an FT03, waiting for Ivy Bridge, and now seems like a perfect time to buy a video card + I am sick of waiting.

I have narrowed it down a bit:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150586

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102982

or should I get a reference card? I am not sure exactly, I've heard reference would be better because it would act more like an exhaust that non reference. My case is tight, I don't want to be heating up the components inside any more than they already will be. The video card will most likely be the only exhaust in my case, I might have one other fan exhausting but not sure yet.

I also have been wondering about the 3 free games...it doesnt mention anywhere on retailer sites how to redeem the offer, I am assuming its through AMD...but I haven't seen anything on their site either

Your case does have an exhaust fan. Its mounted in the top.

I personally would choose the reference as in your case I dont think it would be ideal to be dumping all the cards heat into it. Not ideal in any case really.

The non reference cards you have chosen wont perform any better or worse. They just might be a little quieter and run slightly cooler compared to the reference.

I would personally go with a reference card in case you ever want to water cool down the line. Also, the double D does a terrible job at cooling the VRMs.

if you want just buy the reference and if you find it a bit loud and noisy then you can buy an arctic cooler for 7970 which is the best out there

I most likely won't be using it as exhaust smile.gif Case arrives today but I need to find a place to mount my H60 rad, if it only fits on top then that will be an intake.

Thanks for the advice guys, probably going reference.

Other option was the DCII because I love ASUS.

Bad VRM Cooling = bad oc right? Running at 1440P I'd need to OC to beat a 680

get a sapphire reference.overclock like a beast.i easily go up to 1225 core clock.the noise is a bit loud but whatever.also if you plan for a custom loop then the reference is a must.and it is a beast under water.yeap you need to check vrm temps not to pass 100 C

Reference card all the way.
Leaves the door open for water cooling and some of the blocks I have seen look amazing, also if you have a decent case the reference cards really don't run all that hot.
I am loving mine, getting my 2nd one tomorrow biggrin.gif

Sounds like a plan, that brushed aluminum just looks so cool lol.

Probably won't be going water, but you never know water in an ft03 would be pretty cool and challenging smile.gif

I vote XFX on your list smile.gif it has goodlooking cooler than sapphire, eventhough both would perform the same.
