Help ealing with in camera "picture styles".

*Help Dealing

I am using a canon D1000, (Rebel XS).

With canon as well as Nikon i see that there are "picture styles".
I notice that my pictures are often soft, or softer than i would like them to be. I know that part of this is due to a kit lens rather than a pro series lens, but ...

1.does the picture style have anything to do with this and should i be changing it to fit the situation or just use a user defined setting?(standard, portrait etc)

2.Does picture style only effect jpeg from in camera, or does it also effect raw?

I did find this link for Canon, but i would like to hear from fellow photographers and what works best for them.

Picture styles only affect JPGs, but they can be applied to RAW files in post if you use DPP (Canon's bundled software) -- but they will always apply to the preview on your rear LCD as you shoot, no matter what file output. What I do is try and set a custom picture style that's close to how I want to process an image, shoot and chimp it if I'm unsure if I like the scene.

Thanks. I figured P styles were only for jpeg.
I did not know it showed on the lcd though.
I also did not know that they were applied to raw via the canon software as i have never used it as i import via Light room.
Thanks for the good info.
