total SSD newb sorry for the ingorant qustions

Looking to get my feet wet with SSD's. Long story short, I have a laptop that i use for work that has a hard drive in it, im going in for surgery next week and will be out of work for 6-8 weeks. Looking to use the laptop for entertainment while im in the hospital and want a fresh os, etc.
Can i simply put an SSD in it, install windows and go? How much of a performance gain will I see over a hard drive even if I buy a cheap SSD like the OCZ solid 3?

Im curious to see how TRIM works, etc. I have a limited buget and just want something to play with, capacity is not a huge deal.

When Im done with it in the laptop, and wanted to throw it in my main rig, would there be a special way I would have to format the drive to re-install a new OS? Will the traditional windows format do the trick?

Thanks

If you're willing to buy today, there is a 120 GB SanDisk Extreme on sale for $99.99 on buy.com right now! It's a really fast drive.
http://www.buy.com/prod/sandisk-extreme-120gb-2-5-sata-iii-solid-state-drive-ssd/227072806.html

That's the drive, and apply this coupon:

All you have to do is reinstall windows with AHCI enabled from the BIOS, then I would recommend following Sean's SSD guide on this forum.

Edit: And the performance gain is really noticable for any sort of task, loading programs, booting windows, restoring from sleep. Everything is snappier with an SSD.

Well that's about as good as the deals get on 120GB! You could always find a cheaper one more in the 64GB range though if you just want to keep core files on it. That's what I do in my desktop, and I keep my 640GB drive for storage.

Edit: That said, SSD prices are quickly falling.. So don't feel bad if you miss out on this sale.
It's probably the best sale I've seen recently though, I just jumped on it.
