[BSN*] AMD Wants to Buy MIPS - Page 2

Even an x86 CPU is a RISC CPU. x86 instructions are decoded and chunked into smaller RISC instructions before getting executed.

I just learned some MIPS assembly programming recently. It's pretty interesting.

Good Job Mr. Read,

MIPS makes decent Chips for mobile electronics. AMD needs this if they want to break in to tablets or even phones. The reason The previous CEO if AMD got the chop, was not being ready to jump in to mobile. I personally believe it was because they put to much in to Bulldozer (a new type of Architecture,) and then testing showed minimal improvements.

Report: AMD's Meyer fired over failure to target mobile devices

Ousted CEO found himself at odds with the board because of his lack of strategy and interest in pursuing a market in tablets and other mobile devices, according to The Wall Street Journal.

SGI saw the potential in the MIPS architecture and ditched the Motorola 68000 platform in favor of the MIPS chips. They then wanted a say in the development of future technology and bought them. MIPS was doing low power processors before they became mainstream. That is also thanks to development work done by SGI for MIPS. SGI is also blamed for holding back the development of the MIPS technology. They were probably the last processor company to break the ghz barrier, thanks in part to SGI's mantra that speed is not everything (they were somewhat right).

My SGI O2 is running an R10k model of the MIPS processors and several of the SGI systems I have in house to maintain spare parts for my customers are also using MIPS chips. Once certain people got to be in charge at SGI they started to get rid of MIPS and eventually spun it off as it's own company several years before switching to Itaniums, then Xeons. From what I understand this was a cost only move and it bit them in the rear. SGI lost many customers when they ditched MIPS in favor of Intel. Funny thing is, back when all of this went down, no one wanted MIPS and that is why the spun them off rather than sell them.

I know their processors are top notch and the technology behind them is solid. I also worked with many of the people that are now running MIPS and couldn't say a bad thing about them. Lots of very talented engineers.

I say go for it.

ARM's too cluttered, and MIPS competes with it. With AMD's knowledge and MIPS's technology, I see AMD could do very good in the mobile/ultraportable segment. Now Intel will have some serious trouble to push those mobile Atoms biggrin.gif

lolno

1) I highly doubt ARM has the ~$6B to buy AMD
2) Did NetBurst put Intel out of business?
3) Dozens of millions of APUs have been sold
4) ARM is ARM, x86 is x86 -- not compatible in any way whatsoever

In addition to Usario points, why in the world would ARM want AMD? They have nothing in common other than design entirely different CPUs. This is not how business works. You do not go into new markets with thought and consideration.
