What Android (or Windows) smartphone should I get?

Thread Starter
Hey, in August my family's going to a data plan with T-mobile. So, I can get a smartphone, finally. I've never had a smartphone before, so I'm sure to be amazed by the most mediocre android. So anyway, I was wondering... which should I get? I'm willing to spend up to $200, but there are so many. The galaxy S II looks nice, and so does the Lumia 900. Anyone have any suggestions?

EDIT: I realize the Nokia Lumia 900 is not on T-mobile but it's rumored to be coming over the summer

You can take a look at HTC One S. It will be on T-mobile for $200 with two-year contract. It looks pretty sweet. Engadget also has One S review and Sense 4.0 review on its site.

Check this out: http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/18/htc-one-s-appears-on-t-mobile-website

One S review: http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/02/htc-one-s-review

Edit: Engadget just posted a T-Mobile ONE S review:

IMO you should stay away from some smartphones that seem to be "one trick ponies" because support for them will usually die/trend/fade out within a year or two.

as anteater stated, HTC ONE S is a viable choice.. HTC makes solid phones along with great support/community.

the SGSII is iffy to me, just because im not a big fan of samsung phones. though its not a bad device.

or you can go windows although i have no experience with the latest windows phones so i cant advise you here.

good luck!~

Keep in mind by August there will probubly be a slew of new devices that we dont know about..

The S2 for instance is about to be replaced by the S3 that will be announced May 3.... Whether its a minor update or a huge one its still something to keep in mind and i wouldnt recommend anyone buy the Galaxy S2 right now because of that... the S2 is long in the tooth unfortunately... Most likely I'd make the estimation most carriers with the Galaxy S2 will be getting the next Galaxy as well.. ATT will probubly be first out of the gate though (They seem to be getting the best devices first) but even thats speculation

As said above, keep your eye on the HTC One S, it looks to be a great little phone and the casing design is neat

By August im not sure what will be going on with Windows Phones.. I think Windows Phone 8 is going to be announced at the end of the year and its still unclear if Win Phone 7 devices will be upgradeable to the next OS.... the Lumia is a pretty neat little phone though

Just dont get set on anything JUST yet man... August is months away...

Don't know much about One S so can't comment on that.

I would stay away from WP at all costs unless you can live with 7 different colors of tiles, no flash support, and missing apps from Android. I had one for a year and got sooooo tired of the problems that I just stated. It would be a really cool OS if they let you add a wallpaper and customize tiles like Android where you can add widgets and scrollable wallpaper. Galaxy S2 is cool, but by then the S3 will be announced and you might wait for that. I don't really know if T-Mo has anything too great right now.

The S3 is getting announced May 3rd. So might as well wait to hear the specs on it before buying a phone and going through with buyers remorse. But the One S seems like the most promising phone. Too bad they didn't release the One X for T-Mobile as well. The Samsung Note works for AT&T, you just need to flash a new modem on it and it'll work with T-mobiles 4G.

I hope S3 has better screen than One X, after reading reviews about how great One X screen is, I was sort if disappointed.

Then again, Samsung will probably deliver

I would go with windows, i have the HD7, which is a first generation windows phone, and even on that, is just amazingly fast, beats galaxy S2 thumb.gif
