If this turns out to be just as good for people (long term effects could be horrendous when exceeding the life of a rat...), we would be able to make it in our own homes. Anyone who isn't lazy/stupid would do it. Then again, only the stupid would do it right now.. (or the very desperate)

I've wasted most of the first 40, I could do with a mulligan. Or I need to start believing I'll come back as something more productive :-)

We already make more than enough food to feed all 7 billion of us adequately. The problem there is distribution. A great deal of food is simply thrown away. As for overpopulation, industrial nations already have stable populations, and developing nations will hit that equilibrium as well. The earth isn't going to be destroyed.

All these people talking about how everyone is going to overcrowd the earth and everyone is going to die doesn't think about the technology that plays a role in population.

100 years ago, no one would've imagined 5 billion people living on earth and the ways that we can feed/house all these people (things like apartments, modern agriculture, etc.)

So imagine the technology 100 years from now when this pill might become mainstream (maybe) and i bet that the earth wouldn't be overcrowded as some think it would be.

The earth looks fine from where I'm standing, so why should I recycle/help others/try to push for greener ways of doing things? It won't affect me." The more people in the world, the harder it will be for EVERYONE. The day they make something that is commercially available that can double lives is the day humanity is doomed.. redface.gif
It would also lead to more stupid people..
But it is a huge scientific breakthrough and very interesting... thumb.gif

On the contrary, I think we need a critical mass of humanity to reach out beyond the confines of this planet. Sure, if everyone decided to pitch in for a space program we would have been on Mars decades ago, but getting one group of people large enough to make it happen will be very difficult.

Also, if people would change living standards I'm sure Earth could support a much larger population. Not that I like that idea though. I do think the planet should have a population cap.

Inter system travel should be our long term goal. Once the species is capable of hopping around the galaxy we won't have to worry about overpopulation for a long, long time. It will also insure the (relatively) permanent survival of humanity (yes, visions of Warhammer 40K are running through my head right now).
