Why is this even something "PCGamer" need to ask?

SKyrim didn't need payment for the updated textures. Sure enough they've added content but still, They should be full of praise for the idea, not questioning it!

Updated textures.

They put them in photoshopped, resized them, put a filter on, hit compile and compressed it to a .rar

Yes, so muchhhhhhhhh work.

Compared to 4 hours of new content, containing a new CGI cutscene, game optimization, redone areas to meet fan expectations, and new game modes.

That'd be enough to be called an expansion even in the better days of PC Gaming.

Nope not even close. They already had the High Resolution texture, artists do not draw already pixelized assets biggrin.gif They just repacked what what they ALREADY had, didn't even had to open Photoshop.

Valve may have neem good in HL2 period but now i dont like them at all. They are just focusing on Steam. The idea was to distribute their games online and now they barely make any games.

I'd rather them release games every now and then and them be top quality than them release a game every 6 months to a year and they be absolute rubbish.

I've never played a bad Valve game, ever. Not always to my liking, but I can't ever say they're bad. That's more than I can say for some developers with their annual garbage.

4 hours is not enough to warrant an "expansion" in the better days of PC gaming.

This stuff is great and I'm glad CDP are being the ones to say "hey, charging people through the teeth for minor updates isn't cool, also, this is our game so if we make it better we give that to our fans" and I hope it catches back on.

?

4 hours was the length of alot of games back in the days of PC gaming.

YOu'd be lucky if expansions added 1-2 hours of new content.

Look at Brood Wars for StarCraft as an example.

lol. No. Expansions were typically a full game that required the original to run. All of the C&C expansions (up until Kane's Wrath) took more than 4 hours to complete. Company of Heroes all took more than 4 hours to complete. Warcraft 3: Frozen Throne. Warcraft 2: Beyond the Dark Portal... If you only got 4 hours out of those old expansions you were doing something wrong.

This update for free is good please don't try to question that or make out like it should be paid for content. More publishers need to start releasing such content for free as a service to their fans.

How else can you explain that their game engine is from way back 2004?
Seriously, CDPR made one of the best looking PC games and Valve with all their money... still use Source?

Valve really is content with steam revenue, I mean just think about it from their perspective, whats the point of investing resources in a new game engine or creating a blockbuster hit like HL3 when it probably wouldn't even generate that much money and only really appeal to the PC community (due to HL series being predominately a PC series and this gen of consoles almost at a close in regards to the engine). How much would it cost to create a new engine? and how much would valve even make from a game like Hl3? Probably nowhere close to the steam revenue of a billion dollars last year.

The Source Engine came from GoldSrc, which was a modified Quake Engine. As recent as HL2 it still had Quake code in it. I don't know what you people are thinking but high-tech engines just don't fall out of the sky - they're extremely difficult to make. You can spend millions on one and still have a failure. It's like designing a car: You can't just buy the next big thing - you need a visionary.

You add this info to the point I made about them not creating CS and it becomes clear that they never were a serious game-producing studio. The pick their spot and try to release something of quality (L4D, Portal). Whenever they try to act like a normal game studio they fail miserably (L4D2 was financially successful, but it was a terrible game).
