Help Cooling HDD

Thread Starter
Hi All.

I'm nearly finished with my latest project, a briefcase PC (I may write it up if anyone's interested), but the HDD gets quite warm, even when just idling/gentle use.

It's mounted in the corner of the briefcase (wooden walls) with a floppy drive above it (~15mm gap), the PSU is just in front of it.
When finished, the front fan will blow through the PSU to the HDD and out through the exhaust at the rear, which can only be next to the HDD.
Speedfan is giving me readings of 40+ after about an hour, and I've seen it at 45oC.
HDD is a 40Gb IDE WD Caviar.

So basically, are these temps something to worry about, and if so, is there anything you can suggest?

Cheers.

HDDs dissipate most of their heat through their sides, which are screwed to the metal ( heat dissipating) case HDD mounts. If you've mounted the HDDs to wood, you're trapping the heat inside them!

Hi,

Yeah, I guessed that might be the problem. Do you think that bolting a couple of plates to the sides so that they stick out the back, into some airflow might help? I'll also remove the velvety stuff where the HDD is...

How bad is the temps? Am I likely to kill the HDD?

Cheers.

Last year there were a bunch of HDD reliability testing reports from companies that used HDDs in very larger servers, They generally reported thet HDDs operatihg at the high end of their temp specs lasted the longest.

Wow, really? Do you have a link?

In that case, I may not worry about it so much. I'll keep thinking though...

Cheers.
