What happened to combat flight simulators?

As the question in the title really - where happened to proper, realistic combat flight simulators on the PC?

I'm a huge fan of the IL2 series for it's realism, but I have an itch to play a realistic simulator featuring the latest (or at least modern) aircraft. I have Ace Combat 6 on the 360 but a game featuring flying 'battleships' and being able to fire hundreds of missiles from a single F16 is too "arcade" for me.

I took a break from PC gaming for a long while (my only computer was an Apple PowerBook for 7 years), and can remember that in the late '90s and even the early 2000s, there were dozens of such games. Now the only ones I can find date back to 2003 and I'm after something more modern than that after being spoilt by IL2: Cliffs of Dover and other new-ish games / graphics.

I can't believe that a market doesn't exist for these games, and am shocked that there's not been a comprehensive combat flight sim featuring modern aircraft (F22s, Flankers, Typhoons, B2s, Blackjacks and AWACS etc.) in the last few years. What happened? sadsmiley.gif

I can't believe that this is the only reason. - A simulation of, say, flying an F22 would only be useful to terrorists if they could actually gain access to an F22...and if that were the case, the country (in this case the US) has a lot more to worry about than a computer game! doh.giftonguesmiley.gif

the physics of flight sim hasn't changed. so if you had a good flight sim a few years ago(IL2) the physics still applies. maybe they can create more planes with different physical characteristics and it'd fly different, but pretty much all existing / modern planes has been sim'ed in one game or another so there isn't much more reason to make a new sim. they can only do so much graphics wise of an empty sky biggrin.gif so there isn't much more reason to come out with an entirely new engine then what is already on the market. this is a case where real life lags behind game development (takes like 30 years to design a new generation of war planes) and the "space planes" of the future (aurora etc) aren't really meant for combat (dogfight). it's more of a strategic or tactical type plane.

I can see people creating planes out of existing modern planes with different physics (tailless x29 with vectored thrust or a VTOL F117 fighter etc...) but the sim community tend to value accuracy above all else and the extrapolated physics of these theoretical planes may not be well received by the overall niche community.

so the short answer is the sim community is the one's that are preventing more sim games to be made. there aren't any more planes out there that hasn't been accurately sim'ed already biggrin.gif

go to DCS and you can get DCS black shark if you like hellicopters and if you want a plane you can get the DCS A10 warthog. they are working on more airplanes for the future. they make the best most realistic simulators that i have played. but it is very difficult to master.

Profitability, or the lack thereof happened.

Good flight sims aren't cheap to make and are very niche products. So, there aren't as many around as there once was.

The good old days, a piece of paper full of key combinations I'd just made scribbled down to get me through a mission. Hawx is about as much as you can do using only a single gamepad and no hours of practice so that's all there is. If you haven't looked at DCS then there worth checking out.

here is an example of what the sim community is about
450
$500 joystick/throttle and that's just the beginner's kit biggrin.gif not to mention the fully functional touch screen MFD's, trackIR head movement tracking gear and 6+ screen crossfired displays etc.. biggrin.gif

for those who REALLY like their sim GAMES

or for those who really enjoy their sim realism

this is basically why there aren't too many new flight sim's lately... the sim community is VERY discriminating and demand realism in fanatical accuracy smile.gif

I was apart of the IL2 Sturmovik community and i can say they are a tough crowd of rivet counters...but then again they were the best community to play with as they were all old and retired and had plenty of time to fly with you. thumb.gif

IL2 Cliffs of dover is expecting a patch sometime within the next couple of weeks which should fix ALL the bugs. Cliffs of Dover is incredible from a technical standpoint, I do not have much of an issue playing the current version but i am waiting on the patch to jump in again.

if you enjoy the older crowd, you might want to look into ARMA2 and the up coming ARMA3 community. they are mostly ex-military and tend to take a professional attitude when it comes to gaming. there are a fair number of planes available for flying and can get good combat going if you can find the right server to join. takes abit to get used to military jargon used over the mic, but you can get the jest of it after some time. unfortunately most of the pilots have taxi duty in ARMA2 since very few people actually carry their laser designators with them to paint your target:D i've seen quite a few A10 bombers that does good job just eyeballing their bombs but most don't get into any kind of ACM since there are very few skilled pilots out there. most pilots are just helo taxi drivers.

unlike the CoD/BF crowd, ARMA is a sim community and tend to attract the right type of gamers for "team work". not alot of rambo's out there bazookaing thing up.
