Question to gamers who lived through the 90's

Thread Starter
I sold my gaming desktop a while ago, and since then I have been playing a lot of older games on my laptop with integrated graphics and other consoles until I get my gaming laptop for college. The past few months I played through the following: Ocarina of Time, Final Fantasy 6 and 7, Diablo 2, Majora's Mask, and Oracle of Seasons (I know some of these games are up to 2001, but still).

Anyway, I had an extreme amount of fun with all of these games. I haven't ever been hooked as much to a video game as I was with these. I could literally sit for 3 hours and play Diablo 2 and still not get bored, whereas I often stop playing video games after the first 30 minutes or so because I get bored. Especially with Final Fantasy 6: 2 weeks ago I played for 5 hours straight, which is something that I have only done with video games a few times in my life (I was in a car going on a trip, but 5 hours is quite a lot for me).

This got me wondering: Do you guys who are 22+ years old even enjoy today's games? After playing these games modern games seem quite bland to me (with the exception of some of course).

Also, what are some other games that I should play? I still have another 3 months to go without Battlefield 3 since I have no gaming PC, so I figured I would try a few games out. Console doesn't matter. One I have heard a lot about is Chrono Trigger so I thought I might give it a try.

Forgot to mention I was born in '94. First video game that I played was probably Pokemon Red when I was around 7-8.

I feel the same way, I clocked over 150 hours or so into Final Fantasy 7 and i'd probably do it all over again if they remade it.

Off the top of my head.
Chrono Trigger
Xenogears
Super Metroid
Legend of Zelda : A Link to the past
Secret of Mana
Okami

I cannot play modern games for more than an hour. I lost interest. However, I have clocked thousands of hours (and I mean thousands) on Pokémon, Final Fantasy series, Dragon Quest series, Gran Turismo series, and Tales series. Mostly NES/SNES. Of course Super Mario and the likes, but I didn't play them as hard core as the above RPGs.

I know just what you mean- I play D2 a lot as well still- just can't get into other games as much.

I did get Battlefield 3 for the PC- it is NOT a PC game ... its a console game that they claim is a PC game.... its garbage on the PC, lags far to much for the mouse and keyboard to benefit ... its a far nicer experience playing on the 360 sadly where everyone has the same handicapped "twiddle your thumbs" controls.

That being said its still buggy as hell there too...

If you are looking for something interesting to play that is like diablo 2- may struggle a bit on integrated graphics but check out

Its really quite awesome, very similar to diablo 2 and will def hold your attention for a bit. - It's in beta but you can buy a key for 10 bucks now.

Thanks for the link, I'll check it out. I also spent countless hours with D2, what an amazingly dark game. Torchlight was also good D2 clone, but I guess the uppity graphics turned me off. I like the dark, grimy D2 graphics. smile.gif

Yeah i miss the days of a really challenging and long single player campaign. I think maybe the original halo started it off as it was a huge hit you couldn't fault it, so once you finished you wanted to play the multiplayer mode to keep it alive, but then halo two came out and it was really meh because they seemed to spend too much time on the multi player aspect of it.

That's not to say that there aren't decent single player games out there but everything under the sun has a multiplayer mode. Tbh I really don't mind bf3, i've played it for maybe 1 hour total but don't feel the urge to buy it or anything, I also put 300+ hours into the mass effect series (even that has a multiplayer mode!) and really enjoy a good game of splinter cell or even an rts every now and then.

I have never really been one for MMO's ( i did dable in tibia aaaaages ago though) either though.

anyway that's my thoughts on the matter...

Cheers

I believe that those classic older games will always be available to me, never get old and always stay in a special place in my heart. Today's game do in fact bore me a bit, but not to the point of stopping. But yes, today's games have lost something that yesteryear's games had. That reminds me, I should dig up some of those old Demo CDs that came with pc magazines i used to hold onto.

Every old school squaresoft game. Finally fantasy tactics and chrono trigger were my favorite. Shooters like UN squadron, strikers : 1945, raiden. I could keep going, but going back to the subject, and I personally don't enjoy most of these newer games anymore. Gone are the glory days...

If you have a PSP i suggest to play Astonishia Story, I dont know why but its a simply amazing JRPG. Its funny, corny and simply really hard at times, a lot of interesting characters and quite interesting storyline smile.gif
Which integrated graphics card do you have btw? Maybe you can pull of Half Life 1 or 2 ? Also Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines ,Heroes of Might and Magic 3, Gothic 1 or 2 , Baldurs Gate 1 and 2
I dunno I was borne in 1994 aswell and the first gaming system I had was a Sega Genesis 1998, and PS1 in 1999
