Seasonic X850 Gold Vs. XFX 1000W LTD Black Edition Platinum

Thread Starter
Im stuck between choosing between these two power supplies. The Seasonic X850 is going for $169 and the XFX 1000W LTD Black Edition Platinum is going for $199.99 - $20 MIR = 179.99. Considering that the price difference is only $10 should i step up to platinum instead of gold? Any ideas on the build quality of either of these?

what are you powering?

Do you need that much power?
Small wonder.

What will you be powering with this power supply? If it is just an average CPU and 1 or 2 GPU's, the Seasonic X850 is an excellent choice.

i just normal gaming rig with some overclocking and eventually going to have 2 gpus. I was going about this with the intent of buying an 850watt psu but that 1000 platinum just happened to catch my eye. should i get it since its only $10 more? ive heard a lot of good things about the seasonic psu but little about the xfx one so i was just hoping for more input before i make any rash decisions.

Seasonic is a top of the line PSU maker. Can't go wrong.
If you track down some reviews of the XFX unit i am sure you can find out who makes them for them.

Another one to consider is the Corsair AX850 - 80 plus Gold, Fully modular, 100% sleeved cables and with the current deal going on at Newegg its final cost will be $140 + tax.

The XFX unit is a Seasonic made psu. You cannot go wrong with either. For your needs the 850 should be more than enough. If the only thing preventing you from buying the XFX is doubts about the quality then rest assured you will not be disappointed. XFX has amazing power supplies.(i am fairly certain All their units are built by seasonic) biggrin.gif

Edit* JonnyGURU gave the XFX 1000W platinum a 9.4/10. Awesome! the unit also maintaned all voltages within 1%, which is amazing.

hmm.. i see that the only difference is that the fans that the XFX psu is using is not the Sanyo Denki which Seasonic is using... instead their using a "Protechnic Magic MGA13512YF-O25 135mm fan" which im assuming to be cheaper in quality in comparison to the Sanyo Denkis.

This is correct. You could get the 1000W seasonic platinum, but I am assuming that is more expensive. You should be more than happy with the Seasonic X850 or the Corsair AX850. I was just letting you know that the XFX is also a very good unit.

-Note- this fan uses a fluid dynamic bearing so it is still a reasonably good fan. Just fyi

but considering the marginal price range what would be the best choice? I just found out that the Corsair AX850 , Seasonic X850 , and the XFX 1000 are the same internally with the exception of XFX's fan. I know that the corsair psu has 2 extra years of warranty over the other two. But the XFX is priced way to similarly to the other two to say no to.. If you were to choose between these which would you choose

Here are the prices of these three when they are on sale here in Canada

Seasonic x850 Gold - $169.99
Corsair AX850 Gold -$169.99 (currently lowest i can find 174.99)
XFX 1000W Platinum- $179.99

In short, all will suit your needs and be great units. It comes down to brand name, looks, and warranty. Personally, I would pick the Seasonic unit just because I like saying I have a Seasonic PSU, because everyone knows their quality. I personally don't like the way XFX styles their PSU's, so I stay away from them.

Pick whichever you like - they are all great.
