Legend of Grimrock sucks.

"Tutorial"

Joke.

Get to snails, dies, send me back to the beginning.

This is not hardcore old school, this is just plain lazy. I was loving everything up until the fighting began.

Remove the combat from this game and just make it a exploration type game and it'd be a 9/10 easily.

But the combat, is not a so called "throwback" to the 80's and 90's RPGs. People think it is, for some reason, when it is completely different. Then when I actually get into the fight, having to google "how do I attack" and finding this is the most asked question about the game out of everything on other forums...you know they did something wrong.

And once I learned how to attack, I promptly died from enemies that could not be avoided. I loved the search aspect of it up til then, finding keys, solving puzzles, seeing interesting sites, and creating characters to my specifications.

Then that.

I watched videos, but wow, they really decided "Eh, we'll get everything right but the combat itself..."

Should have either made it Turn Based, or allowed us to remap attack to our mouses. You know, they could do a throw back to older RPG's and improve on the bad stuff.

They got most of the good stuff, but decided to keep the bad stuff. The terrible controls isn't what made those games good...they could you know, innovate on them.

Whaa, at least give the game a chance. You are the first person that I've seen on the forum complain about the game. IDK, I think that its very entertaining. You seem to be in the minority. Maybe go back to Mass effect or something?

You are supposed to exploit the grid based movement to your advantage. It is somewhat tactical. Do not back yourself into a corner and get yourself surrounded. Use the grid to your advantage. Attack the enemies from the side and back.

Basically employ hit and run tactics. Taking hits from baddies is bad.

Obvious troll is obvious. I hate D3 so maybe I should make a thread like this? Grow up...

Okay OP, the beginning snails were so easy to beat playing that part over again.

Equip armor on the bodies of your front party members. Equip the cudgel to your party member hands specializing in maces. Give the dagger to the other front part member.

Right click on the weapon to attack. Then back step and side step with your arrow keys and use Q and E to turn and face while waiting for your weapons to recharge. When the opponent comes in front of you, attack again. Repeat. You can basically kill the snails from the sides and behind without getting hit at all.

Find somewhere with a 2x2 grid or a looping ring type area to fight.

This is not a pure holy trinity (tank, dps, heal) type of RPG game.

It's exactly as I imagined it to be after only being told that it's a throwback to the old dungeon crawlers, and I had 0 problems figuring the game out.

I was born in the 80's and grew up in the 90's and this game is exactly what I thought it would be, reminds me of some of the old greats (most of them anyway) that I played:

Dungeon Master I & II (Probably most like this, as the devs cite it as an influence)
Eye of the Beholder I, II, & III
Lands of Lore I
Menzoberranzan
Ravenloft: Strahd's Posession and The Stone Prophet
Might and Magic series
Wizardry

If you had played any of those, or any similar game, Grimrock should have been like riding a bike, second nature.
