[TPU] NVIDIA to Launch GeForce GTX 690 Before May 5 - Page 5

I'm in the same camp that believes this will be the smallest Availability of any card in recent memory when it launches. And it only makes sense for me if it had 8Gig, Otherwise why bother with a monster setup like this. You already have 4Gig cards pending from several manufacturers and we have yet to have a dual card match a SLI setup in performance. We have seen sacrifices constantly on the dual cards one way or another. Lower clock speeds etc, lower overclockability etc.

Unless this thing shows up with 8Gig (4 per card), I'll consider 2 or 3 680's (SLI) 4Gig a much better alternative.

OT:
Also to the poster above that mentioned the 590 and people pushing the cards past where they should have and itbeing their own fault. Every single advertisement of the 590, even on my ASUS box stated plainly "Overclocks 20%" or some other figure, cannot remember exactly. It was an outright lie.

Not saying those guys did'nt skirt recklessness, but taking a Corvette to 150 mph on the empty highway was "expected" and Fukushima was not expected. Also I wont go into who tested the firmware/drivers etc at Nvidia...old argument.

2 or more 680's over a single 690 any day. I think that has more e-peen too.

I have my GTX 590 OC'd to 720 Mhz from stock...608? I wouldn't consider that a lie. What ASUS says and what Nvidia says are two different things.

Also, the GTX 590 was NOT supposed to match up completely with a pair of 580s. At the time of the 590's release, 580s were still $500 apiece, while the 590 was being sold for $700. Sure, it's not the best OC'er, but coming within 8-10% the performance of GTX 580s, which had much higher stock clocks, for $300 less seems like a win to me...and the fact that i am able to OC to 720Mhz is further proof that the 590 is a ridiculous value for what I paid for it. Even at my res of 2560x1440, there is still literally nothing that I cannot max out, with the exception of BF3 with 4xMSAA, and that's simply due to the VRAM limitation.

There is no way in hell this card no or ever it will pack 8GB. Thats because there is no room to put that many chips. The chips have to be denser and high bit to have 8GB which is not possible. Considering how miserable GTX590 was compare to GTX580 if anything GTX690 will come close to GTX680. It will not be better.

Hopefully this just a joke and they end up releasing something like the 780. I'd rather have an entirely new die with a different supply manufacturing chain that can have the same availability as the 680 if they ever come back in stock...

That's probably the reason why they can't supply is 680 cards. They are using some of the chips to launch the 690.
nV doesn't want AMD to have the most powerful single card solution with the 7990.

I wouldn't say that 590 performance was miserable. Sure it didn't overclock well but it's still faster than 7970 or 680. Considering that 680 doesn't consume so much power NVIDIA can use much higher clocks with 690 compared to previous generation dual gpu cards.
