Looking to upgrade from Sennheiser 429s

Thread Starter
So right now I'm using a pair of Sennheiser 429s on my main rig along with a Xonar DG. The cable, as some of have heard is really thin and frail, and is no longer stable enough for listening sessions. At first I was looking at the ATH M50s but heard that the Ultrasone 550s were a bit better (and cheaper). My question is, is there a better headphone than the 550s in the same price range (~$150)?

Use will be divided up by Music: 60%, Movies: 30%, and Games: 10%

Soundstage and Bass are important.

Thanks!

I've switched from a pair of Sennheiser 280HDs or something to Logitech G930s. They are great headphones and my favorite no wires! biggrin.gif

Those are more like gaming headphones rather than headphones tailored for music

Amazon has DT770 pro-80s for $155, It is really bassy. But I not sure if you would like that kind of bass. The Ultrasone Pro-550s goes for $145 on amazon. Also You might beable to find a pair of Ultrasone HFI-780 on ebay cheap if your lucky, which bass is hard hitting and go deep. It's bass is not boomy.

Tho the ultrasone headband might annoy you as the HFI-580 and HFI-780 uses Pleather as it might put pressure down on your head. I don't know if the Pro-550 uses pleather. I think I saw a pair of PRo-650 going cheap some where too which should be another good choice.

The only problem with the ATH-M50 is they have a very very small sound stage, some people don't see it as being small tho.

Hey thanks for the suggestion. After doing a little research, seems that the 550s and the DT770s are on pretty equal ground. I did find a pair of the DT770s here but I'm not sure if that place is legit yet. If so, it's a steal.

Something fishy about that site, I went to see how much the shipping would be to see if that really a good deal. And my mail-ware blocked a attack from that site you linked.

To be on the safe side you better off ordering off amazon.com as both Ultrasone pro 550 and DT770 Pro-80s are there. Also BHvideophoto has the Ultrasone PRO-550s for 149 as well with free shipping.

Thought it was too good to be true....anyway thanks again, will probably go for the DT770s since a lot of people swear by the pads and I tend to use my headphones for long periods of time

Oh whoops. Sorry. Don't want to sound like an ass or anything but what exactly makes headphones more suited to music or gaming?

Lots of stuff, the soundstage, Eq, and overall sound can be completely different. Not saying gaming cans cant sound great playing music because I listen to music on mine but there is a difference

Well from my understanding, gaming headphones are more suited for just that, games. They usually come with mics, other alternative connectivity options (i.e. USB, wireless, etc), and marketing gimmicks (i.e. 5.1/7.1 surround sound, gaudy branding, etc). Hi-fi or audiophile grade headphones are suited to give the listeners a more pure connection to their music, by using much higher or better quality components, better sound signatures than those you would find in gaming headsets. I mean at the end of the day if you look at them both, you'd have two pairs of headphones, just one set is better at one thing than the other.
