Best SSD for Sabertooth x58? - Page 4

I'm sorry for another questions but I have very confused ideas. wink.gif
I'd like to ask some questions:
1) Crucial M4 256GB or OCZ Vertex 4 use Marvell controllers. Why do I have to unplug the cable from Marvell conection and plug it in Intel conection on my Sabertooth x58?
2) With my PC I make videoediting and I have some drives with RAIDs. Marvell drivers are giving me some worries with RAIDs and I was happy buying a SSD because I tought Crucial M4 256GB or OCZ Vertex 4 would have used different drivers but I'm noticing they use Marvell. Will I always have to fight with Marvell? My God, my head is bursting. Help me please!!!
Thanks a lot for clearing my ideas.

The Vertex 4 is better than the M4.

The Marvell controller in the SSD has nothing to do with the Marvell controller on your motherboard. Do you understand this? They are separate entities.

And like I said before, on the motherboard, the Marvell controller for the SATA 6Gb/s connection on the motherboard is crap, I do not recommend you use it. That is why you should use the native Intel SATA 3Gb/s port on the motherboard. The Intel SATA 3Gb/s connection on the motherboard is not crap. Do you understand this?

Now. What do you mean by this below?

From what you have stated there I understand that you have RAID arrays set up with drives on your motherboard at the moment. This in turn means that you have your SATA mode set to RAID. That is completely fine, leave it like that. That is OK. You do not need to worry about anything because of that. What do you mean by Marvell drivers?

Now. What is the issue here? What confuses you?

You have cleared some ideas. I thank you. In these writings I mean: if I go to My Compuer/Device Management/Storage Controller I have Marvell 91xx SATA6G Controller and I think this driver create me problems with RAID arrays. Sometimes my drives disappear and every time I have to shut down my PC and turn on again. This is my problem. I hope if I will plug the cable in Intel connection I have not fight anymore with those problems.
Thanks for your availability.

Don't use the Marvell ports at all. Only use the Intel then. In Windows uninstall the Marvell SATA driver. In your BIOS disable the Marvell SATA ports.

If you currently have a RAID array on the Marvell ports you have to back up the data and transfer it back to the array once you recreate the array on the Intel ports.

In behind of my Sabertooth x58 is there the connection for the SSD? I don't see it but I remember you I'm a blind person. wink.gif

Just plug on the SATA ports as Sean said.

When I say behind the mobo I mean like here, you can put the drive anywhere in your case where it can fit:

GOOOD!!
If I can put my SSD in every place, then I can leave the CAVIAR BLACK 500GB (with OS) in its mobil rack and format it for storage use...... but I also have other drives inside my PC.
I also have 2 drives (1000GB) in RAID (array) and other 2 RAID (2T) (array). So that I will get 1 drive for OS (SSD), 1 drive 500GB, 1 1000GB Volume and 1 2T Volume. Can my Sabertooth x58 manage all those drives?
Thanks

Hi, I hope somebody can help me. I have just bought an SSD (it is Samsung 830 250GB) but I will get it in some days.
In meanwhile I have opened my PC for verifying my connections. I have a complicated PC because I have some harddrives in RAID (Array).
I'm seeing the main drive (500GB with OS) has its connection in Intel port (black) but I have seen the white connections are used too (both).
In that series of black ports I see only one free port. When I will receive that SSD I will unplug the 500GB cable (with OS) and I will plug the SSD cable.
But I have a a doubt: if both white ports (2 ports) are used, what array will I have? Now my PC does not run smooth when I make video editing.
Is it meaning that the white ports do not work fine because they are Marvell controllers? Can I change something? But I think it is very difficult because my Sabertooth x58 has only one free port.
In Device Management/ Storage Controller I see: Marvell 91xx SATA 6G Controller
This is my motherboard: http://www.legitreviews.com/article/1457/3/
I remember I have:
1 drive for OS
2 drives in array (for music storage)
2 drives in array (for videoediting where I will put avi and mpeg files)
Some suggestions please?
Thanks
