help me understand Ram - and need a recommendation

So I need to buy some ram for my new rig. I'm getting an Asrock X79 LGA2011 with a 3820 cpu. I would like to put in about 16gb of ram. This machine will be used for photoediting, hd video editing and some gaming (BF3).

When I look at Ram, I get confused. What are timings? I think I want lower timings right and lower CAS latency? What is better, higher timings and lower speed I guess it would be (12800 vs 10666) or higher speed and higher timings?

Also, any recommendations on quad channel ram right now for my mobo that is under $100?

Hello there! Well lets start here I don't recommend an Asrock motherboard especially for gaming on bf3. There lower line boards and especially with photoediting on top I think i would an ASUS with the X79 chipsets. I've worked on a few of these and they seem to be stable and pretty well reliable. As far ram man as far as what kind of ram to use depends on your motherboard your getting. Do your research because some ram doesn't do well with some setups. Timings are different values of references that do varies task for your pc and learning on how timings effect your pc in real time would be best learning hands on. Read first and then you can change ram timings in the bios to the speed you might want just always keep a back up of the timings that were stable. You want the lowest possible timings to gain the best performance hand and hand with the mhz of the ram. Cas latency is a one of the bigger values as far as numbers you see posted for the ram timings. Also 2T vs 1T a HUGE difference in speed night and day with this being said most ram comes stock at 2T and some ram overclock very well at 1T so before you buy like I said do your research. 12800 vs 10666 well that all depends one what your fsb on your processor your getting because if your processor is say 1333mhz fsb and you have 1600mhz ram, yes you can run the values individually but syncing them is ideal in my opinion and the processor fsb is the main source where you'll jump in performance. And as far as Quad channel for 100$ not sure without research hoped I helped!

Thanks for the info CSTX. We have an Asrock Z68 extreme4 in our other rig that I have been happy with. People on Newegg gave the Asrock X79 board good reviews. Have you heard differently?

We are going with the x79 and LGA2011 because I want to be able to drop in a 6 core processor in the future if needed.

So is 2T or 1T Ram better?
