EVGA GeForce 6200, enough for youtube 480p videos?

Thread Starter
I just got a free Socket 478 old Dell. It's got a Celeron D 320 in it right now, I will probably upgrade it to a Pentium 4 3.2GHz.

In short, I just want it to be able to play 480p youtube videos.

Will a GeForce 6200 256mb do this?
If not, would a GT 520 512mb do the job?

I can play them now, but they are horribly choppy.

1024 x 768 resolution btw.

$10 price difference.

But I really don't want to spend more than I have to. If that 6200 will do it, I'd rather not spend the extra $10.

I just don't know enough to decide this. And $50 is already a lot of money for a decade old computer, lol.

I would go for the GTX 520. More memory plus if Zotac honors their rebate, it's cheaper.
GT 520 will have video/flash acceleration. It should run 1080P videos with ease.

The Geforce 6200 will not.

It's not even worth considering the 6200. The GT 520 is far better.

Thank you very much! I wonder if the PSU is capable of handling that GPU? I have no idea what the amperage is on the 12v rail...

A GT 520 uses very little power (like 50-watts at max load for gaming). Whatever PSU you have, it should be more than enough, especially if you're not gaming on it.

hmm.. i have a Pentium 4 3.2 ghz with an ATI x1650pro AGP and it plays 480p videos fine.
It will lag on 1080p but its the cpu that's holding back the card.

does your geforce 6200 have 128mb ram? it should be fine with 480p.
the slowdown could be ram or browser related. How much ram does the pc have? you'll want at least 1.5 gb for windows 7

In any case, the GT520 will be like 10 times faster than the 6200. You could also get a cheaper GT220 or GT240 for similar performance

Well, I just finished installing the 3.2GHz P4, what a huge difference it made! I just played that same video I played yesterday on the celeron D, (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N9qYF9DZPdw) And it was smooth! There was a small hiccup once but I'm pretty happy. That being said, I feel like a video card with dedicated memory would probably make this machine feel great!

It's amazing how big the difference is between the 2.4GHz Celerdon D (newer Tech) and the Pentium 3.2GHz (older tech).

It's enough to make a Weird Al reference. It's all about the Pentiums baby. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qpMvS1Q1sos

Thanks y'all! I'll update this when I install the GT520.

I would grab the 520 plus you can usually find a pretty good deal on them
