[Build Log] The Griffin mITX FT03-MINI powerhouse - Page 2

post #11 of 113
Though a 680 sounds like overkill, it's possible, albeit not as overclocked as you would like if you had, say, a 500 or 550 PSU. Running A Sugo or any SFX 450 by SS with a 470 and 480 was possible, and a 680 necessitates lower watts. thumb.gif It will be fine for his build.

People seem to believe the wattage on the PSU must never be reached, or it will fry, even given time. The PSU is designed to handle it, and it's not overspec'd, either.

And about the PSU, a 480w i don't think is going to cut it for a 560 448cores + overclocked 2500K, and the case only accepts SFX psu's and i don't think that there is any 600W+ SFX psu available.

2500k = TDP 95 watts
560Ti = TDP 170 watts
everything else you can possibly cram into an ITX box if you really tried = 100 watts
so.... yah a quality 450w PSU is more then enough biggrin.gif

for case the LIAN LI PC-Q08B or SILVERSTONE Sugo Series SST-SG08B Black
for PSU a Corsair HX650 AT LEAST! (ignore if you are getting the Sugo ^).
everything else is ok for the build.

Case and PSU are perfect for that build. Please do your research.

Well it maybe do, but in my opinion is better be safe than sorry.

If he wants to fit it in an SG05, there aren't really any other options available. The 450W will handle it just fine.

He HAS to use a Z77/Z68 board since he wants to overclock.

lol. people like you shouldnt be allowed to post. if the PSU is of a good quality, it dosent matter what kind of wattage it puts out. If it can run the whole computer with 450W then fine. it matters if it can do that amount of wattage with no voltage ripple. voltage ripple is what kills parts. my rig right now uses up MAYBE 500W, and i have a CPU that puts out much more wattage than a 2500K

just in case you didn't notice the math biggrin.gif 95 + 170 + 100 = 365 watts. a quality PSU will output its rated wattage (most of the time even 10 to 15% above rated wattage) w/o any problems as long as there isn't an ambient heat issue. that leaves 100+ watts (conservative estimate) of overclocking headroom for an "ITX system"... also remember, the TDP is not reached on a continuous basis. even in heavy gaming, a system rarely ever reach max rated wattage draw. only in synthetic bench will you ever reach that usage on a continuous basis. CAN he go over the limit? sure.... if he goes nuts on buying a ton of delta fans trying to achieve a load temp of below 40C during synthetic bench biggrin.gif but the likelihood is VERY low and he should have thought about what he REALLY wanted before building the system.

even with the new asus z77 board, the overclocking capability of an ITX is still not where the gene-Z is. the resulting thermal load does not require a delta fan to cool down. I would estimate the overall draw of the system while gaming is around 300 to 350 watts max. well within the capability of that PSU.
