Joining to learn how to build a computer

Hey all,

I've been lurking for a few days now. I joined as I am about to build a PC for the first time, and was looking for a place to start learning about everything. I've already learned quite a bit (and have started picking out parts, in fact). Anyway, thanks for having me on the forum!

welcome, there are alot of guides, and alot of different directions and reasons to build computers
1) HTPC (home theater pc) which people want remote controlls, wireless, small and quiet, storage, and high quality play back
2) gaming
3) rending
4)(my build) all of the above

building computers is "easy" in regards to the amount of information you need to know, its easier then building a powertrain on a vehicle, thats what i compare it to.

its cheaper to build on your self, you get more out of it, you learn, and you can customize, often giving a use and a budget people here will help you on your way.

EDIT: sorry i didnt see u were already picking parts
1) not all parts are compatible
2) someone who is new to the field might think something is good, but there might be something significiantly better for your price/performance and bang for buck ratios

before finalizing any build, i HIGHLY recommend posting it on here, we will set things straight smile.gif

Thanks for the response and advice! Yes, I definitely plan on asking you guys to give me the OK before I go and order any parts.

The PC will be built for gaming, but will also be used for movies - Purely entertainment (I have other computers for work / school)

So far, my parts list is looking something like this. I BELIEVE everything here is compatible, but I'll look deeper into it as I figure everything out more -

RAM
G.Skill (16 gigs, 240 pin, 1600 MHz)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231497&nm_mc=OTC-Froogle&cm_mmc=OTC-Froogle-_-Memory+(Desktop+Memory)-_-G.SKILL-_-20231497

Motherboard
GIGABYTE GA-Z77X-UD5H
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128545&nm_mc=OTC-Froogle&cm_mmc=OTC-Froogle-_-Motherboards+-+Intel-_-GIGABYTE-_-13128545

GPU
Thinking NVIDIA gtx 570/580 or AMD 7850/7950/7970. Need to narrow it down.. will depend on what my costs are looking like at the end.

Case
Probably the NZXT Phantom

Power Supply
Need more research

Processor
Need more research.. probably an i5

HDD
Seagate Barracude (1 TB, SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5")
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148840&nm_mc=OTC-Froogle&cm_mmc=OTC-Froogle-_-Hard+Drives-_-Seagate-_-22148840

SSD
Crucial M4 (128GB, 600 MBps)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148448

Network Card
Need more research

Sound Card
creative sound blaster X-fi extreme gamer... or just onboard audio.

Keyboard
Nothing yet

Mouse
Nothing yet

I'm not necessarily asking you to look it over, but just showing you what I'm thinking about doing. I'll ask people to look it over once I've got everything picked out.

alright, well bare in mind your also going to need an operating system, i have the phantom and love it, power supply will be cpu and gpu depandant, i have a gtx570 set-up and love it, but i also run 2.

you wont need a sound card unless you are using a high end sound set-up, put the money in a better gpu/cpu.
the i5 2500k is a good all around GPU, good for gaming and what not

there are new GPUs coming out, and just coming out, might be better to skip the 500 and 6000 stuff and get a 600/7000 (nvidia/amd) stuff.

also, you might need a monitor/somewhat basic speaker set-up, router, connection cables, and so forth, just trying to list all the things you might need.

Hello Joey, welcome to OCN!

The main thing with first time builds is if you have problems, don't start RMA-ing stuff. Get help in places like this with troubleshooting.

If you're going Sandy Bridge CPU I'd get the 2600K rather than the 2500K at this point. The prices have already dropped here and there.

Good thinking. Buy remember, you can't use high heatsink inside NZXT Phantom.
