AMD guy looking to switch to 2500K

Thread Starter
Hey folks, I have been an AMD guy for over 10 years now, but the more I read on here and elsewhere, it is quickly appearing my ASUS 990FX Sabertooth mobo and FX chip was a bad purchase. =(

I have firgured out the Intel chip I want, the 2500K (subject to change if you guys have better advice), I am just looking for good advice on a quality motherboard for overclocking, I am fond of ASUS but have no problem switching brands.

I am building this comp over time, but I do plan on using multiple GPUS in the future, if that will help on the advice given.

Thanks in advance. =)

Haha I was in the same boat, had a Phenom II X4 955 BE and was waiting for BD results. Was disappointed and went the Intel route (which was actually cheaper and better for me).

Do you live near a Microcenter? You can get i5-2500k and motherboard bundle deals for very good prices (even more competitive than purchasing the components separately on Newegg)

This is a pretty nice motherboard. Support for SLI/CFX too.

If you do plan on having multiple GPUs at some point, I'd recommend a 2600k depending on the cards. Say they're high end cards such as GTX 680s or HD 7970s, you'd definitely a little bit more power then a 2500k. But if you're just talking about a pair of mid-range cards, like GTX 460s then the 2500k will be more then adequate

Wow, im doing the exact same thing. I just bought a 2500k today! I'm making the switch after 4 years of AMD. Im mainly an ASUS mobo guy too, but I've been branching out with Gigabyte and my new MSI Z68A-GD80 that got from a buddy after giving him some water cooling parts and some cash. I can't really recommend any mobo, but I know that you can't go wrong with a 2500k. Good luck with the transition! thumb.gif

I will have to look into the 2600k.

As far as boards, I was looking at the MSI Z77-GD65. Seems like a solid board, any opinions? Not too familiar with MSI.

Solid board indeed. Is that your price range ($170)?

I could go as high as $300, was looking at the Z77 Sabertooth.

The only real requirements I have are - No bigger than E-ATX, 4 RAM Slots, PCI-E 3.0, USB 3.0 On board headers, and a power design for stability and overclocking potential - Northbridge and Southbridge aftermarket waterblocks would be kinda sweet too. =)

I'd say...save your cash...get one of these:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103995
Use some saved cash for good cooling...maybe put some towards a better videocard..
..clock the snot out it and be happy! applaud.gif
A 4+ ghz 960T is just about as good as a 2500K @ 5ghz
FX chips are pretty bad...
Your motherboard is pretty good biggrin.gif
2500Ks aren't very fun to play with....Look at the rig I'm on..
I sold a 5.4 Ghz 2500K to build this biggrin.gif

Hmm, the 2600k seems like it might be doable, for only $30, is there any reason not to do the 2700k?
