space for cooler?

Hey folks,
Im about to start buying gear for my new build, - so far i dont know what case im looking for yet, and have still to decide on a psu, what im going for, is an i5 2500k, and a z68 ext3 gen 3, and i wish to clock it to whatever i can on air, but my question is, - when i fit my cooler will i have plenty room for removing ram? (samsung 1600) and also, what other coolers are good? and what is the script on thermal paste, i used to use as5, is it still the weapon of choice?

If it's the Samsung 30nm ram you should be fine with just about any cooler. AS5 is fine. If you have a high pressure mount you may get a couple degrees out of a diamond based tim, but really I wouldn't put too much thought into it. I'd swap out the Golden Orb for a decent single tower, or dual tower if you want to spend a little more.

I'd look for a case that states that it supports up to 170mm coolers if you want to keep your options open. For a PSU, prioritize efficiency rating over raw wattage. imo. Like, if you're considering a 750 bronze and can get a 650 gold for similar price, go for gold. etc.

Hi otter, thanks,
im not sure i would go for another golden orb (i didnt know it came for an 1155 i5 either) i was thinking of the nh d14, but it looks a massive cooler, and also looking at this :

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NEW-MARS-BLUE-GAMING-ATX-CASE-PC-COMPUTER-TOWER-LCD-TEMP-DISPLAY-750W-PSU-/130607009041?pt=UK_Computing_DesktopComponents_RL&hash=item1e68c8cd11

i quite like this case - is the psu any good? i didnt know they came in bronze etc ratings (i realise i should post in the psu, but building a new rig i would have 8 different posts lol).
I guess im also asking, would there always be enough room to close the case with such a huge cooler? (most probably a daft question)

I can't tell the brand of that psu so I dunno.

If the case is wide enough there should be no probs with cooler clearance, though at 185mm that case is a bit narrow. I would look for a case that specifies exactly the cooler size compatibility. The NH-D14 is seldom a bad choice if you're fine with the price and size. There are other good choices as well. The size isnt so much an issue unless you tinker around the case a lot (so long as it clears everything). Even if you aren't overclocking, a good cooler can keep the noise down since the fans dont work as hard.

Thanks again otter, what other coolers would you recommend? bearing in mind, im only into taking my clocks to around 4500.

Ive had a look at a few cases, and most seem to be just 185mm wide, im gonna make another post in the cases forum, so i'll ask about one there, as i cant see one that specifies anything about what cooler size they take up to.

just a side note, ivybridge is coming out VERY soon. why stick with a 2500k? (unless you already own the chip/board) performance per watt on ivybridge is far superior to sandybridge (22nm vs 32nm tech) and cooling is directly related to the TDP of the chip.

Hi psyclum, im choosing the 2500k because of price and overclockablility, not sure if ive asked elsewhere but does the ivy bridge come out in the 2500k also? pardon my noobness, - i know jack about 22nm and 32nm and with all due respect please dont try explain it to me thumb.gif as i will not understand it lmao
I dont already own the board yet, im kind off still swaying between that and a z77 board, i will prob go for the 68 because its 40 gbp cheaper

EDIT: whats the difference between msi z77 and ASrock z77 - then there is gd55 and gd65, and also gigabyte z77 i seen an ASROCK Z77 PRO3 ATX FOR 100GBP, Is this the same atx that do psu/case bundles on ebay - if so - they any good?

here are some good coolers to choose from. i will link them to newegg just so you could see images and specs biggrin.gif

for the massive air coolers

thermalright silver arrow http://www.thermalright.com/new_a_page/product_page/cpu/silver_arrow/product_cpu_silver_arrow.html

for most of the air coolers, it will block the 2 closest ram slots so you may need to remove the fan on the cooler before you can add/remove your ram.

for cases, i would recommend browsing lineups of cooler master, bitfenix, corsair, antec, fractal and silverstone. a lot of people seem to like nzxt too so you may want to include that. i personally like the trio of cooler master, bitfenix and corsair.

about 2500k, i think it is a great choice if you are not fond of getting the "latest and greatest". the cpu have great overclocking potential and so far can handle everything that i throw at it. highly recommended biggrin.gif

good luck in choosing your items thumb.gif

You definitely want to have a wider case. Try to aim for ~200mm to make sure you can fit most coolers.

The NH-D14 is a great cooler and will definitely keep your temps low. There are cheaper options and will keep a 4.5ghz OC at a perfectly acceptable temp too. I HIGH recommend that you DON'T get a closed loop water cooler as they aren't nearly as effect and efficient as good air coolers. Not to mention they are more expensive, louder, and have possibility of leakage.

There is a list of compatible rams on the Noctua site if you get one.

Hey ohhgourami,
Many thanks for your input.

the nh does look a great piece of gear, so what other options do i have - cooler wise -what would you recommend? i am willing to try save a few extra bucks here and there, but dont want to scrimp on hardware(unless i can) i really dont want to go the liquid cooler way - electricity n water dont mix wink.gif
I think i am settled on the ram though, - if the samsung is that cheap and can go to 2133 no probs.
At the end of the day, although this is a gaming pc im building, it is solely for flight sim, maybe the occasional internet usage for downloads, but thats it.

Hi nethermir, i just noticed your post as im writing this, - thanks for taking the time to send me some links, - having a little browse through what you have posted, im really not into the idea of having to remove coolers, if i want/need to change my ram, so i may need a little help here, to try make sure i could (if possible) select a cooler that doesnt impede that in any way.

Thanks guys, ill post back soon.
regards
paul

EDIT: just re-reading your post neth - i dont mind removing a fan to remove ram, thats fine, i mistook that for "removing hsf" for removing ram.
