[PROJECT] PC Desk

Thread Starter
Hello everyone, i just started visiting this forum a couple of weeks ago watching case mods and worklogs and i thought i'd add mine as well.

I'll start by saying its not an original idea. I saw L3p D3sk and i thought i must have something like that. Of course i dont have al those tools and money at my disposal but i'll try and make due with what i got.

I'm about 60% done with the project and dont have assembly pics for all of it, but i have some finished pictures of what is completed. i'll start uploading and you'll see.

I made the supporting frame from rectangular steel elements 40x40x1,5 and the top is clear glass (that will probably change to something else)

The case for the pc components will be made from 8mm MDF and the motherboard tray will be made from 2mm aluminum. I started making the case from aluminum but i didnt have acces to welding tools and ended up scratching that and turning to MDF. I'll post some pics with the aluminum case that i decided to dump cause it wasnt turning out as i liked.

Components:

CPU: i5 2500K with H60 cooler.
MB: Asus Maximus IV Gene-Z
PSU: Corsair TX850
GPU: Asus GTX 560TI Direct CU II
HDD: WD Caviar Black 750gb and a WD 320gb older drive
RAM: 8GB Corsair Vengeance Black

The first pics are with some older components that I already sold.

This is the frame for the desk, i dont have any photos of the build process for this cause i didnt have my camere with me. I didnt do the welding only the painting.

I'll start uploading pics for the pc case that i started making out of aluminum. I have to tell that was a real pain. I had to cut them with an angle grinder, didnt know at the time that it was easier to cut sheet aluminum with a jigsaw...so that was a nice learning experience.

I tried making the joints with angled aluminum 15x15mm and pop rivets. I used small diameter screws for the first assembly.450

Also keep in mind that this was my second try at pc modding, the first time i made two cutouts in my thermaltake case for fans 4 years ago so that wasnt really complicated.

Good luck! Subbed.

I love desk builds.

I think all you had to do with the aluminum version that you scrapped was to move the corner pieces inside of the panels, kind of like a frame, so you don't see it on the outside. You could probably almost do that without having to cut anything.

I'll post some pictures of the cutouts i made with the angle grinder. I have to tell you, that is one difficult tool to work with. One slip of the hand and you mess up your work, or worse...end up with a missing finger.

And some pictures with the "finished" case that i dont like, cause i dont think its necesary to add any more pictures of it, if i dont plan to use it.

I'll upload some pics of the case i started that actually turned out really nice so far (the one thats made out of mdf)

I thought about that, but i chose my version at the time cause i couldnt cut a perfect straight line with the grinder and this way it was all nice and smooth.

And finally some pics with the MDF version of the case, which I might add is very easy to work with, except the dust and the fact that it dulls the cutting tools.

Back side of the case... after holesaw and jigsaw cutout, pretty nice cuts if I may say so...

450

Marking phase of the motherboard tray, and my new mobo just arrived at the time biggrin.gif looks pretty sweet.

450

The old motherboard tray that didnt turnout so well. BTW i used some of the old aluminum case for this one to save on the materials. I still have half the aluminum sheet that i bought for the first one intact and didnt want to use it...maybe some other projects in the future.

450

Oh and i just remembered, i'll upload some renders from sketchup when i get home...dont have sketchup at work.

I had to buy a new case, until i finished this one cause i kept havin small heart atacks when someone aproached my desk with a glass of water...so i bought a fractal design core 1000 (pretty cheap) It gets kind of hot when gaming though.
