I have played a lot of Starcraft 2, never once ran into an issue with someone being an *******. Can't get through a minute in a dota game without someone being an *******.
And it seems consistent across all Dota type games, with HoN being the worse and LoL not as bad. I just don't get it.

Because sc2 is largely a 1v1 game. With dota type games, you have to commit 30+ mins for 1 game and it can ruin it for others if you have a person feeding, for example. You also can't leave a game and join in on another like in CS.

This is pretty much the reason. The match making system punishes people if they wish to remove themselves from the game which has been so clearly FUBARed. (That isn't to say I support the opposite; just letting people leave willy-nilly.) Therefore, the person is left to just stew in their own hate juice for the better part of an hour. It makes for some serious top-shelf rage. Just some seriously good, old-fashioned, stick-to-your-ribs distilled human hate.

If you play 3v3 or 4v4 SC2 games a bunch you'll start to see some team raging creeping in. It doesn't excuse the absolute crap attitude many MOBA game communities, however.

Valid reason, except there is a lot of opponents bad mouthing you too though, while in like starcraft games are more civilized between you and the opponent.

It just seems like all I ever play against are rage induced teens just hitting puberty, low maturity level and all.

It just makes me mad that it could be a game I might enjoy, but can never get the chance because everyone else ruins it.

speaking of community...

I'm a big time Dota fan (not HoN, not LoL... DOTA) but I have to admit that the Dota community is probably the worst for any gaming community that I have seen. Rage and hostility is the norm. A peaceful game where people praise/accept each other is rare.

By reading this topic it seems many of you don't understand or have never played a MOBA game properly. For instance, in MOBA games you only die because:

a) You pushed it too much (ie you help your team, whether its good or bad)
b) You were unlucky.
c) You are just dumb.

What does this mean? This means that If your brain works properly, after you die a few times you will realise that the guy in front of you is better than you and you will play defensively, and thus won't get killed any more (at least not easily).

My point? A MOBA game is like a PCW but without knowing your mates...with the difference that any player playing dumb is not only not helping his team...but helping the other team. Do you know what is like to have a feeder on your side...a guy that tries to be the hero but he ends up feeding the other team so they can win? You clearly have no idea how MOBAs work, seriously. I've played thousands of MOBA games, and I know that past the encounters in which you just don't know the abilities of the hero that you are facing, you die because you truly want to. You see, in Counter Strike, when played competitively, you have to hold a stand...and a pro will kill you every single time because if you are not there, you are useless. In MOBA games what counts is the long term...and players may be wherever they want to, because its much better to have them jungling away of the enemy rather than feeding them.

You see, I rage a lot in such games. Like I said, MOBAs work VERY different from any other multiplayer game, because every failure from any member of the team means a benefit of the other one...and when you see people dying for no damn reason, of course you start to rage because THEY ARE MAKING YOUR EXPERIENCE WORSE.

So, Its ok if you suck at MOBA, but its not ok if you die the same every single time. What to do if you are outplayed by the guy in front of you? Camp at the point (or tower), and accept it, but think that every time you die you are making things worse and keep making your opponent stronger.

Seriously, I find it amusing that people complain about whiners and cryers... when MOBAs are the hardest games because team play is EVERYTHING. You see, in a Quake game against a pro I will end up 0 - XX (XX being the amount of frags my opponents gets to make me in the time of the match). In CS games, even If I'm a sucker, my team gets to win because every time I die my team doesn't lose in the long term (they can win the round)..but, in MOBA, a player that is trolling is just ruining every damn game and, thus, should be perma banned forever.

And yes, I clearly know when somebody doesn't know how to play properly, and when somebody is just doing the wrong thing once and again...forever.

I actually love helping people learn certain games. So depending how this works out, could be interesting...but could see some people being over celebrated and try to become brown nosers even more so.

*blah blah*

Your post contains nuggets of truth, such as that an outplayed player should play more defensively and accept the reality that they cannot hold the lane away from their tower. SHOULD.

But in the end, you are everything wrong with this game.

Someone dies a bunch and doesn't adapt? Rage at them. You kill someone a bunch? They're dumb. I'm guessing you inform them of this as well. You just cannot fathom that some people might be inherently less skilled at the game, or perhaps don't invest enough time to imprint the nuances and instinct into their subconscious (the most important part of this game).

I have an acquaintance exactly like you and everyone I know never wants to play with him. Are we worse at the game? Possibly (though not by much). But he (and you) are worse at the meta-game (life).

I like DotA. I am pretty new, and getting better. Let mr put forth this situation:

I join a game, say hello and instantly get:

"Your mom said hello to ******** last night," and
"Don't suck like your mom ********** last night," and
Playing enigma "Don't suck (N-word)-ma."

Then Venomancer rage quit around 5 mins in after blaming it on "Noob Teammates"

On top of that, I am STUCK in a rut. I was not great when I first started, about 50% win ratio. Then I was in a few games in a row with leavers / intentional feeders. I have since gotten a lot better and even when we lose I am usually on top of the list, but now I can't get a good game but 25% of the time. That means that 1 out of every 4 games someone leaves etc. -- usually on my team. I have 0 abandons and am friendly.

My point being that a community reward design would be what I would want...

P.S. If anyone wants to group up find me on steam. Also, is there a OCN DotA2 group?
