[Phoronix]AMD to drop Radeon HD 2000/3000/4000 support on Linux and maybe Windows too - Page 3

4870 is still capable of running new games with low - medium settings so it's shame AMD stops support so soon. It seems that if you want long term driver support it's better to buy NVIDIA, new drivers work with ancient 6xxx series.

At the point where the game costs more then the GPU its time to upgrade. Sold my HD 4870 for $60 2 month ago. No point to support it. People that still use HD 4870 to this days are either pirates or dont play games at all. Nobody is stupid to buy $60 games and not upgrade GPU.

Smart move, hopefully they'll be able to make some serious improvements in the future. In my opinion, supporting 3 generations of graphic cards is fair, supporting 7 generations is superior, but while they can't make decent drivers for their more recent cards, they should definitely drop the older cards and focus on the future.

True, but AMD have habitually sucked as of late at new game support, I could see active members using 4xxx left out in the cold, with one option, new cards :(

It's time to update anyways - 4 years is a long time. Timing could have been better for consumers though; new GPU prices are still high.

so its a good thing they are doing this

we dont really need to refresh the drivers every year for a product that been dropped many years ago

if this could help amd make better drivers for future cards im all for it

Forcing people to update because of no driver support is a douche bag move.  Not having enough processing is a sign of the times, not really this.  As far as I can see half the DX9/10 games still run well on a 4870.

They are not forcing everyone. It game like Crysis that make people upgrade. If you are going to attack Crysis 3 with HD 4870 then thats your problem. People that are going to use these cards are not looking forward for the latest and the greatest.
