wireless issue, some help needed.

Thread Starter
With my current ISP i am getting 28mbps down and 1mbps up, and i am using an Asus RT-56U Router and my computer is using an Asus USB-N53 adapter but my computer on wireless is getting a consistent 5mbps down and .5mbps up or worse, Ethernet connection gets the full speed, dont know what the issue is here, my brothers laptop seems to also have this slow connection even when right beside the router, its making playing online pretty much impossible with the horrible lag.

the only conclusion i can make at this point is that its the router causing this but i have no idea how to fix it,, one thing i notice with the router is that it gets really hot, dont know if this could cause my problem but at this point im looking at replacing the router if i cant solve this.

would appreciate any opinions on this, and if i were to replace the router what should i be looking at as a replacement? i would want something with similar features but i would also want it to handle heat better then the current.

If you could:

Ping your router over the wireless and let us know the results.

As for the router being really hot, what do you consider really hot? Can you hold your hand on it? Is it in a well ventilated area?

Have a look at what bands the router is transmitting on, and the frequency/frequencies. Ensure you are getting 5Ghz N if available, or an equivalent. A good source of information to provide would be from the small app: inSSIDer. Download it here, and have a look, maybe post a screenshot.

(it's also a pretty good tool for picking up signal strength and interference)
