Sticking with AM3+ socket

If all goes well and AMD doesn’t hit any delays, the Bulldozer successor codenamed Vishera could launch in Q3 2012. This is the timeframe that AMD is disclosing to its partners and let’s hopes that it can stick with this schedule.

One of the possible issues is that engineering samples are planned only for Q2 2012 and usually AMD provides them to platform manufactures at least two quarters before the planned launch. This can mean that AMD is launching Piledriver cores and Vishera in very late Q3 2012 which kind of makes sense.

Despite the fact that AMD already told its partners that Vishera powered Volan platform is coming in 2012, many are preparing to launch of Bulldozer desktop successors in early 2013. They learned the lesson with Bulldozer that was delayed for many quarters; let’s not say years. It is better be skeptical than sorry.

Volan uses the same AM3+ socket and will use well know AMD 990FX northbridge and SB950 southbridge, the same chipset that you see today with Bulldozer FX processors.

Of course Vishera CPU is competing against Ivy Bridge CPUs and alternatively Ivy Bridge E high end parts, both 22nm. Ivy Bridge quad and dual parts will launch in early Q2 2012, most likely April / May while Ivy Bridge E, 22nm quad and hexa-cores should launch in late Q3 or early Q4 2012 and put a lot of pressure on Volan platform.

Still AMD will have the price advantage and will in any case end up significantly cheaper compared to Intel’s solution in the same high end – enthusiast desktop market segment. It always had the advantage and it always will.

http://www.fudzilla.com/processors/item/25158-amd-piledriver-to-launch-in-q3-2012

AMD’s current plans call for the replacement of Zambezi cores and the Scorpius platform by the new Volan plaform and new Vishera cores in Q3 2012. It looks like AMD can meet this schedule but at this point we could not find out the exact clock speeds.

We did find out that there are three CPU versions coming in mid Q3 2012, the eight core AMD FX 8350, the six core Amd FX 6300 and a quad core AMD FX 4320. The eight-core version is expected to get to engineering sample in early Q2, so any day now, it should move to production candidate sample stage in early Q3 2012 and get to production ready and production status in Q3 2012. The launch date is yet to be decided, but this all depends on the product readiness in Q3 2012. If all goes well earliest you see Volan platform AM3+ and Vishera processors is Q3 with a possibly unlikely scenario to launch them in Q4 2012.

Eight, six and quad-core Vishera come with enhanced AMD turbo core, DDR 3 1866 support and AM3+ socket. They are naturally a 32nm SOI based porocessors manufactured in Globalfoundries Dresden Fab 1, the fab that now has plenty of experience with 32nm processors. The bad part is that Vishera has to fight with 22nm Ivy Bridge and at some point server version of Ivy Bridge E, meant for enthusiast market. But don’t worry about AMD too much, the Texas-based company will definitely have a price advantage.

AMD flagship FX 8350, the one that will replace the current flagship in the AMD world known as FX 8150, will enter in production in Q3 2012. We don’t know if it can make it for a launch in the same quarter, but it looks like that is the plan.

Currently the new FX processor is expected as an engineering sample, and AMD tells its partners that this is expected to happen in early Q2 2012 and by early Q3 2012 it should get to production candidate sample stage.

It all goes well in Q3 2012 AMD enters production and launching this production whenever it feels like it has enough of them. AMD FX 8350 is based on eight Vishera 32nm cores that will support Enhanced AMD turbo core technology, DDR3 1866 and fit the same AM3+ socket. At this time AMD doesn’t mention any clocks.

It replaces FX 8150 clocked at 3.6GHz with 8 cores, 16MB cache and turbo ability to jump to 4.2GHz in needed. This one is based on 32nm Zambezi desktop bulldozer core. AMD FX8350 should upgrade the performance of AMD top category and Vishera cores are promising some better performance at the same clock.

I didn't know this was this far away from release. I am leaning towards switching a an IvyBridge system to fully utilize my CF cards with PCI-E 3.0 slots as well as have a much faster CPU.

I really really wanted to wait for PileDriver since getting an FX 8120 is not something I'd like to do since they suck soooo much power when overclocked and I run folding@home on my system just about 24/7.

It should be AM3+ as it is supposed to be a revision of Bulldozer.

Hopefully then AMD will FINALLY just throw in the towel and stop making desktop CPUs.

Don't you ever have anything positive to say? Seriously, we get it, Intel is ahead in the desktop segment. It's people like you who have made BD appear way worse than it actually is. (Outside of its crazy power usage, which is pretty terrible)

Piledriver would want to work on AM3+ boards - 990FX in particular !
I bought a 990FX board just before BD came out , to put a BD on and when BD came out it underperformed , they also discontinued the Thubans leaving me stuck on a PII 955 without a reasonable upgrade path . But until I see the bios for my board showing support for the Piledriver I can not assume My board ( a Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3 ) will support it .
Further there is no guarantee that Piledriver will perform substantially better than BD - I hope it does , but much can go wrong .
