Bulldozer felt like a flop long before it ever came out. No word from AMD. No indication of anything. Nothing, not a word. With Piledriver we're getting to see some promising things with Trinity, ballpark release dates and so on. Im not expecting a Ivy Bridge killer, but I am expecting AMD to become competitive again. Theyre doing so well in every other segment, graphics, APU and server, surely they can nail down the desktop segment as well.
As far as I know, that is a definite. Piledriver will be AM3+.

AMD has re-introduced the "Clustered Integer Core" microarchitecture, an architecture first developed by DEC in 1996 with the RISC microprocessor Alpha 21264. This technology is informally called CMT (Clustered Multithreading) and formally called a "module" by the AMD's marketing service. In terms of hardware complexity and functionality, the module is midway between a true dual-core processor, where each thread has a fully independent core, and a single core processor that has SMT (Simultaneous Multithreading), where two threads share the resources of a single core.

Ref: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amd_bulldozer

Edit: They are two seperate cores in the sense that they can do stuff without hogging each others resources. Unlike hyperthreading which splits a single core. The difference is- they share a single floating point unit.

I just hope piledriver has both hyper threading and hyper transport

Macleod-

AMD had so many issues with FX - a completely new architecture and GloFo had terrible 32nm Fab issues, it just dragged on for eternity.

Rory Read has dismissed many AMD people and has made it clear that the past is not going to be the future for AMD. It looks to me like Trinity is on schedule and perhaps better than originally expected. If Vishera/Piledriver is out in Q3-Q4 and offers ~15% better performance than FX I think many people will be happy and satisfied. AMD is working overtime to get back on track but they can't do it overnight - it will take time.

Personally if Intel was the last CPU maker on the Earth I would not buy their product again after their outrageous chronic violations of anti-trust laws in their efforts to crush AMD and eliminate consumer choice. Blackmail, intimidation, bribes, etc. all to try and hurt consumers. That and the fact Intel has been convicted multiple times of U.S. tax evasion is all I need to know about Intel.

I vote with my wallet and pigs will fly before Intel gets another dime of my money.

i want both intel and amd to make awesume cpus .that keeps the price down if intel just takes the lead and stays there there prices will go up.im not loyal to any company other then sony and they even pissed me off with takeing linux off my ps3

Agreed. If Bulldozer had released when they first started talking about it back in late 2009, it wouldve competed with Nehalem and done pretty well. Unfortunately they couldnt get it done and it released a generation too late. But with Ivy Bridge not looking too hot right out of the gate, that could be a big break for AMD to catch up and make up valuable lost time.

I went with AMD because when I first started PC building, I was pretty broke so I needed budget stuff and AMD was giving me unlocked multipliers for some really great overclocking for $50-60. Then they were giving me 3 core and 4 core processors for well under $100. Basically when I was broke and needed some love, it was AMD products that fit the bill. So now Im kinda sentimentally attached to them. I know you should take emotion out of it and be objective and all that but we do this hobby for fun and anything you do for fun, youre not going to be objective about and anytime you do a hobby for fun, youre gonna get some favorites and some loyalties because by definition, anything you do for fun is going to have an emotional investment in it at least a little. Anyway, thats my lame story. wink.gif

Actually they both already make awesome CPUs but some folks hate on AMD because the BD/FX CPUs were not a big jump in performance over the Phenom II CPUs.

Buy what makes you happy but it helps to be an informed consumer when it comes to convicted criminal corporations.

They were if you used thread-intensive programs. In some scenarios the 8150 wipes the floor with Thuban and the 2500K.

Dont forget because the whole internets says AMD sucks and if its on the internets, its gotta be right. Dont want to be the odd guy out on the forums. You wont be cool.

Kinda ridiculous on how much people are hating on AMD. Lets just end it by saying Bulldozer (8120,50) is good for heavily threaded tasks and intel is good for gaming. biggrin.gif
