[TR] Phone graphics will surpass game consoles soon, says Nvidia - Page 8

I don't see it as such a bad thing, although they need to invent a way to play the games off your phone through a different control system.

Something like a docking station, you can hook up your monitor / tv / keyboard / mouse / controller and play away all off your phone biggrin.gif

If that is based on the price of them then I find that quite funny because in the last year I have spent just over £1500 on my sig rig and that is including the cost of around 26 games (I'm not counting the other 50 or so I had many years ago) compared to my PS3 which I spent just under £3K on and I only have 16 games laugher.gif

If that is based on the overall experience of playing games on those platforms then I can't agree more thumb.gif

So much fail that I don't even feel bad for you. I don't know what games you buy but you must love PSN don't you. rolleyes.gif Just look at all those $.12 discounts for having a premium account.

OT: I rarely play games on my phone, yet I bough an iPhone. I only use it for calling and texting even though its a very badass version of a gameboy.

If a controller was available... and you could simply hook up your iPad or iPhone to your HDTV and play games at 1080p, I think developers would be more inclined to make better quality games, and more lengthy games.

Except vertex shaders don't scale with ROP, pixel, and shader ops. Polygons/s is really a useless metric lol. Based on current advancement, we won't see handhelds match current console parity for another five years at least and even longer to see "console quality" games.

Developers claimed that we would see PS3-quality graphics with the PSV and that can still be true, but as far as having hardware parity? No, the PowerVR quad-core is much weaker than the RSX. You have to consider the resolution and the type of game you want to achieve as well.

Second part of your post: The investment still won't be near the console's level because you essentially described a console and defeat the purpose of a tablet by "hooking up a controller and plugging it in to your HDTV." No one buys phones/tablets for gaming... You buy a dedicated handheld or you buy a console/gaming PC.

consoles will never die due to A. hardware doesn't change so you don't need to worry about having X GPU with Y MB and Z CPU ,B it's simple to use and C playing a phone isn't that "fun"

Considering handheld manufacturers like HTC are choosing thin designs over power density, you're not likely to see any breakthroughs. I expect the performance to be linear and not balloon.

That was nothing but speculation but that is the point.

You can't see mobile pushing it's way into peoples living rooms? With Bluetooth and other wireless capabilities I could easily see mobile devices competing with console if not through a dedicated tablet device through an Android based box with a future Tegra iteration that allows for an increased TDP. A few more games like Shadowgun and Riptide GP and I think we're going to see a push for mobile but I don't believe it will ever fully overtake a console let alone mainstream unless power inclines on those devices or they stem from what they are now (mobile). That's where I don't believe that chart and I agree with you, but I still think there are avenues that could be taken. Graphics aren't essential for consoles either, we've seen proof of that repeatedly. I do perceive a future for Android, ARM and mobile hardware in gaming, if not Wii-like gaming.

Dirty console gaming peasants = can't afford PC gaming (at least that is what I am assuming) I was just saying I spent more money in one year on my PS3 (£3K) and I only have 16 games where as with my sig rig I spent £1500 and I have 26 games (+50 that I'm not counting) and I haven't even had my sig rig for a year yet, I've had it for 10 months. If it isn't to do with month then

That's not what the picture means, it means console players are the weaker race since they have inferior graphics, gameplay and pretty much every aspect of it compared to PC gaming.

But you can also put that future tech in a console which can dissipate a lot more power and doenst have a battery.

I also say it's BS.

It would basically be a program for PC that has a mobile version for phones and the 'console' would be a console meant specifically for the program. OnLive is already on PCs and phones, so it's definitely viable. Only thing holding it back is other countries having bandwidth limits. Hopefully in the future those countries with ISPs like that realize bandwidth only holds people back and isn't needed. Also, hopefully we can see fast internet (5mbs+) everywhere in first world countries at least.
I've not tried OnLive, I'm not sure it's available in Australia. But I kind of like the idea of having the game rendered on my device so I can play it anywhere.

I'm mainly thinking of this for home. You'd just plug your phone or slate into your HDTV and play your games at 720p or 1080p. However, throwing a controller in your bag won't hurt portability much, and you'd only do that when you know you're going to need it. On top of that, if Apple and Google made it a requirement for games, then it'd have a pretty high adoption rate.

All you need to do is hide the touch UI and check for button presses via the wireless remote.

I know I'm just saying it's unlikely that they would increase triangles/s so drastically if everything else was holding it back. We should see improvements in other areas as well.

Well for smartphones you're looking at 1280x720 at most, which is what most titles on 360 use, and with slates you're looking at 1080p - 1600p.

It would eliminate the need for a console though. (Assuming good quality games are present.) You've got your slate for general use that you use at home, or take out with you, and then when you want to have a gaming sesh you plug it into your HDTV.
