Is a sound card worth it?

Thread Starter
From what I have read on this forum, the value of a sound card depends on the quality of the sound system being plugged into it. I have the Altec Lansing ACS 33 (~$60 new), which seem to be half-decent. If I wind up getting a sound card, I'd probably get the about cheapest thing I can fit in a PCIe slot (Something along the lines of an Asus Xonar DX). If I do that, would it increase sound quality noticeably through these speakers?

Not by much but yeah you will notice a change specially in codex.

For instance if in a video game counter-strike for instance you shoot with a gun the sound is gonna be different.

In musics and movies you will notice a difference but nothing insanely major with that card but you will notice a difference even if u aint
a fanatic.

Gaming with headphones? Yeah, a soundcard is considered a key component to any gaming rig.

Realtek just doesn't offer the same soundstage as a dedicated card. That said, I did game professionally with it and I don't have any issues with it.

Not really worthed for music only, the difference with your speaker and the soundcard would be too small imo.

Not to hijack thread, but i have a Klipsch promedia 2.1 setup running on onboard sound. Would i notice a difference? I run via HD audio deck, things sound pretty good.

Buying a sound card that costs more than the speakers/headphones you're listening from makes no sense. What a sound card will give you, if you listen with headphones, is Dolby Headphone and some other DSP modes. Some swear by it, but I didn't like it at all.

I won't fully elaborate on my thoughts regarding sound cards because I expect I will get flamed. Let's just say I own a Xonar DX and ever since ABX testing it against my onboard ALC892, it has been collecting dust. For the record, testing was done using the following headphones: Beyerdynamic DT 880, Sennheiser HD 595, and Ultimate Ears TripleFI 10.

Is it worth buying a video card when you have an IGP in your i5? Youtube only displays at 24fps.

OP mentioned his speakers for a reason. Is it worth buying a GTX 680 to play games on a 1024 x 768 monitor or is a GTX 460 more than adequate?
