Strange Problem I have with my computer ( Random Freezes )

post #1 of 24
Thread Starter
My computer keeps seemingly randomly freezing. It used to shutdown also but hasn't done that in ages.
I have tried a new cpu cooler and have determined it is not heat that is the issue as some suggested.

I think it is a ram or motherboard problem, I think that it would most likely be my motherboard because I have corsier vengence ram and it seems good quality. My motherboard on the other hand is a p.o.s. I had issues with sound leaking to my mic and this problem I fixed with getting a sound card.

It randomly freezes very weird there is no pattern in them. I can run my computer for days (not straight, but I probably could) and have it not freeze and some other it will, I found out that if it crashes normally afterwards it will not post unless I turn off my power supply for a while (or cut the power) for a few minutes and then turn it on and it will work OR Moving my ram to a new slot, this works well. So at the moment if my computer freezes I just shut off my computer move my ram and it is sweet untill it decides to have a cry.

Sorry for the ,what I think, is a long post, I'm just trying to give as much info as I can to try find a solution or a way to find out if it is my mobo without trying a new one.

Specs (from DXDIAG)

Operating System: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit (6.1, Build 7600)

Processor: AMD Phenom(tm) II X4 955 Processor (4 CPUs), ~3.2GHz (stock cooler)
Memory: 8192MB RAM - Corsair (CMZ8GX3M2A1600C8) Vengeance 2x4GB DDR3-1600 CL8
Video Card: ATI Radeon HD 5770 ; Driver Version: 8.950.0.0
Motherboard: ASUS M4A87TD/USB3 AMD870 AM3 DDR3 USB3 SATA3 PCI-E

Well, if the motherboard is indeed p.o.s, can you still RMA it?

Try to run the PC with one RAM stick only. See if it will crash. How frequent is the crash?

I use the free program "who crashed" to help troubleshoot problems, it reads your dump file and puts it into something more understandable for us laymen, might be worth a go for you.

Oh dear! After some digging online several people are suggesting that PSU, Aywun Megapower 750 W you are using, is P.O.S. At this point I am leaning toward PSU since a crappy PSU will give you problem. The fact that you need to unplug PSU does seem like PSU is acting up.

* Make sure all standoffs are used.
* If you can, RMA that motherboard anyway to fix that microphone problem. ASUS usually has 2 years warranty for it.
* Regardless if the PSU is at fault or not, I will suggest replacing that PSU with a quality unit. Your current setup won't need anything more than 500 W anyway.

Suggested PSU

* Antec NEO ECO 520W
* Rosewill Green 530 W
* Rosewill Capstone 550 W
* Seasonic X560 (this one is modular, meaning you can disconnect unused cable).

For motherboard, I would suggest something like ASRock 970 Extreme3. It is affordable, and gives you the option of using FX CPU should you desire down the road.

I'm not sure about dual graphics. What do you mean?

for that cpu and that motherboard u might also suffer throttling due to the vrm/mosfet protect mode check
it out here---> http://www.overclock.net/t/946407/amd-motherboard-vrm-information-list in a way it would make sense how its random and how u might have to wait for some periods of time before it cuts back on mabe the vrms/mosfets are cooling post a snippet of hwmonitor or take a look at ur tmpin0 &tmpin2 temps now on a motherboard suggestion i would take a look on the compiled list of good and bad motherboard created by guys rule of thumb green is good red is bad and u can pretty much tell what yellow means
