Any recent GPUs with a regular Display Port and not mini, or can I get a mini?

Hi OCN smile.gif

My birthday is within the next two weeks, and I want to move from two 5850s to a better single card for more vRAM so I can better utilize my eyefinity. First of all, just by taking a quick look at Newegg, most newer $300-500 GPUs don't have a regular display port, just a mini display port. Currently, I have my 3 monitors hooked up to one 5850 using: HDMI, DVI and an Active Display adapter, specifically this one.

Now, modern day GPUs have an hdmi, and DVI, but no active display from what I can tell, just mini display ports... how would I go by doing this now?

Mini works just the a normal DP..
just well....mini rolleyes.gif

You will be able to get adapters for mini DP to DVI or HDMI =3

Would you mind linking me said adapters? Thanks smile.gif

Most DPs on GPUs, mini or regular, are not dual mode. Meaning you still need an active adapter. DP uses an entirely different digital signal than LVDS used in HDMI and DVI.

Since you already have an active DP to DVI, just buy a Mini DP to DP and chain it with that active adapter.

You can use the Accell DP-to-DVI Single Link Active Adapter. Just need miniDP-to-DP cable. The new GPU should come with 1 of this cable. Can't link it (using cell phone) but any adapter cable will work.

It will be like this;

GPU > miniDP-to-DP > DP-to-DVI active adapter > DVI - Monitor.

HDMI
If I'm not mistaken SOME cards actually come with a mini-DP to HDMI adapter...or maybe its a Mini DP to DP..

Not something I use, so I don't really know all that much about it

Thanks for the replies guys!

So if the GPU doesn't come with the cord, I'd just need to buy http://www.amazon.com/DisplayPort-32AWG-Cable-Plated-Connectors/dp/B0034X6SCY and I'd be good to go?

You need a mini DP male to DP female. My bad. Looking for it right now.

EDIT:

Chain it up with that active DP to DVI adapter.

That cable in that link is 6 feet, might have signal treshold issue to get to the active adapter. Get a shorter one, 2 or 3 inch adapter cable. You should be able to see this short cable in reference 7970. Browse newegg for reference 7970, the pict of the cable is there.

Of course I do, I wouldn't be able to use my eyefinity if I didn't! tongue.gif

I see. Well, whenever you get home and can link said short cable, I'd appreciate it. I'm bad at all of this GPU / monitor stuff.

Thanks again guys.
