Light Craft Workshop has pretty good faders for significantly less.

Hmm yeah a fader could also do. Aren't those built out of, like, 2 polarizers that you rotate against each other? Doesn't that somehow mess with reflections and such?

The guy from the shop was pretty embarrassed about the whole shipping thing and wrote me back he'll throw the right adapter in the mail today. So probably on wednesday or thursday I can finally see if those Haida thingies are any good or if they're going back. (and I damn sure hope they are good because latest day I could ship them back to the shop for a refund is this Friday or Saturday)

Basically yes, faders are two cir pols, both very thin. This (the inherent cost of larger cir pol) plus the multi-coatings to prevent flares / ghosting (along with supply-demand) is why they are so costly.

welding glass works but it is cumbersome to use and after all is said and done you still need to post process to get the green/purple tint out.

that seaside picture sure is a beauty!

Allrighty, as promised here are some test shots. All were made with WB at 6000K manual, no WB correction in post so you can see for yourself.
Exposure is set to the advertised f-stop values of the filters and corrected the RAW's to see how far they were off.
First some 100% crops from somewhere near the center:

no ND

ND8 + 0,33EV

optical quality is rather good I'd say. The ND1000 seems to soften things a bit.

yea that tinting can be fixed in post im sure with the slight tweak of a few sliders to make your image pop more. looks pretty good

Welding glass I never found it to be too cumbersome since I always do PP anyway. Also, you can make it a bit less cumbersome by buying $1 filter rings off eBay and supergluing them to the glass.

Yep I think they're a keeper. Especially for the price.

I'll need to fiddle around with the color balance to get some presets for them but the resolution and stuff is really stunning.

This little script-fu thingy here seems to produce quite good results in Gimp
click me

Also messing with the color temperatur in-body seems to help a great deal already. I suppose the max. value of 9900K might be borderline enough for the ND1000 in many occasions. When stacking those filters, a combination of that script and in-body correction is needed most likely.
