Switching to laser mouse

Hi everyone, I'm contemplating switching from an optical mouse, the Deathadder 3.5G, to a laser mouse. I'm prepared to switch from a cloth pad (QcK Heavy) to a hard pad (probably the one reviewed here). As far as I see it, the Avago 9500 is the best current sensor, and there's no ETA on mice featuring the Avago 9800 yet (?). So which mouse with the Avago 9500 would YOU recommend to a seasoned Deathadder 3.5G FPS player? (medium sens, around 10 inches for 360 degrees). Some aspects to consider:
  • durability: I'm in no mood for malfunctioning mouse buttons or broken cords after 3 months of use or **** like that smile.gif
  • size/weight: preferrably not larger or heavier than the Deathadder 3.5G
  • tracking: definitely not worse than that Deathadder!

Why?, If you like the shape, weight and feel of the DA, there is really no other mouse out there that can compete with it, its sensor is rock solid

Yeah good point, should have explained myself better maybe. One thing I'm not satisfied with regarding the Deathadder is the build quality. Both my Deathadders started getting mouse click problems relativly soon after purchase (clicks not registering sometimes). That's no reason for switching to laser, though. That's just desire for experimentation. I haven't had a laser mouse in years and want to give the technology another try, all the parameters I mentioned are merely there to make sure I won't regret it too much smile.gif

From my experience I feel laser mice are the bad for FPS, the slightest speck of dust in the sensor can cause the cursor to spazz out. Lifting the mouse off the mouse pad makes the cursor jump... etc, this happened with my DA and XAI. Have you tried any logitech mice? G400 or MX518? Both are great optical gaming mice.

None.

If you're really a seasoned gamer with the DA and play on a certain (high) level, it will feel inconsistent for you left right and centre - although not by much.

That's model-dependant and per-batch dependant. You might get a good one or a lemon. Most people complaining on forums do have lemons, and products that sell well get more reports of lemons (because they sold more than other preoducts).

Most mice comply with that.

Definately not a laser then.

Have you considered getting another optical mouse?
Like, one with the A3090 or S3095 sensors like the CM Storm Spawn or G400?

There are several mice with similar or even better tracking than the DA out there that are also optical.

The tracking part makes it impossible to recommend any laser mice.

Okay, thanks for the warning then. Might give the G400 a try when my Deathadder shows signs of breaking down. I had thought that laser technology had advanced to a point where it was a replacement for optical mice, yet it seems like the majority of you think that isn't the case. If the need for experimentation won't abate soon, I can still try whether switching from a cloth pad to a hard pad would be an improvement (I'm starting to dislike the amount of friction the QcK has).

Edit: The optical mice mentioned as alternatives for my DA also seem to be reasonably cheap. Not having to pay for the Razer brand name (and ridiculous packaging) would be a plus too smile.gif

DeathAdder is not a laser mouse.

And Xai is well known for freaking out when dust/hair gets in the way, its due to the tiny sensor hole, and that is fixed on like sensei, never happend the time I had sensei, but happen a ton on xai.

There is nothing wrong with laser, there is only 1 flaw and its the built in acceleration, which most people dont even notice (yeah I count everyone and not just the mice nerds).

The avago 9800 is used in the BMW mouse and Qpad 5k LE (but 5k LE have input lag bug).

Not sure what people mean about tracking and laser, my laser mice xai, sensei, 5k tracks just fine on all my pads (10+ pads)

Be careful about the G400 shape, its not close to anything the shape of DA.
I personally love the shape of my DA but I HATE the shape of my MX518/g400s, worst shape on any mice for me personally.

If you enjoy the DA shape there is no reason to change mouse, the sensor is good.

such an odd thread... ditching one of the best mouse/mat combos in favor of laser and a hard pad. yikes.

Saw those two mice you mentioned. They aren't for sale yet though, are they? Also, I think the BMW mouse looks just silly smile.gif

I think I'd be prepared to give it a spin seeing that it's cheaper than the DA.
