Phenom II X6 1090T overclocking questions

Thread Starter
Hi, I did my first real overclock on my Phenom II 1090T (did the extreme Asus AI II auto-overclock before) and I got some question with it. First, here's my overclock:
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
2217844

So, some questions about it:

1st: About temperatures, whats the max temp should I go with the Thuban chip? Is 57C (after 45m of Prime95) considered to hot for an ambient temperature of 23C (can go up to 29C in summer), I'm running it on a Hyper Master 212 EVO.

2nd: About voltages, is my chip good for running 4.1Ghz @ 1.416V (1.375V idle)? And, how much time should I run Prime95 to say my overclock "is ok".

And, third one, is there something that I could improve on this overclock! (btw, NB is at 2760 Mhz)

Thank you for your time and have a good day.

That is a great overclock dude! Better than mine!

Max safe rated temps for these things is 62C so you want to keep it in the mid to low 50's during stress testing. It wont fry your proc if you get too close to 62 but it will shave years of life off the thing and itll die much sooner than normal.

Youre having better luck with your cooling cause Im running a Hyper 212+ and the same proc but my temps are in the 50-54C range during Prime95 and at a slower clock than yours. My NB is at 2800 though so maybe thats adding some heat.

Your voltage is a little lower than mine as well as Im running 1.45. Im really curious as to how yours does under Prime. If its stable, Im gonna have to go back to the drawing board cause I thought Id hit my redline on my trusty X6.

As for stress testing, I usually want 4 hours minimum before Ill feel safe with an overclock but 8 hours is about the most Ill do. If it can handle Prime95 for 8 hours straight then its at least stable enough that itll work for me cause all I do with my rig is game. The hardcore guys will tell you that if you cant do 24 hours straight, it aint stable.

Well, it was a good overclock, until it lasted rolleyes.gif
No problem by 2h00 of Prime95 so, decided to do the a BF3 game. Crashed after 10m. I think it my voltage should be a little higher (~1.4V idle), but I don't really feel good about getting more than 57C on Prime95 if I up the voltage (I maybe applied to much thermal paste on the cpu).

Anyway, back to an overclock that worked better (4Ghz @ 1.375V idle - 2500 NB) and got no crash with 2 hour of BF3. Will try to run it with Prime for the night and see how it goes.
Do you have any tips on how much and how I should apply thermal paste with a Hyper 212 +/EVO (juste did a "too" big grain of rice tongue.gif)

And, to get the NB stable @ ~2700Mhz (I think it was one of the reason it crashed, as it seemed more of a RAM error in BF3), what voltage do you suggest?

Thank you for the information, will try to get the 4.125Ghz stable.

EDIT: After seeing some posts on the forum, I got the NB voltage to 1.25V and decided to try the 4.125Ghz @ 1.4V (idle) - 1.44V (load). Will see how it goes, if it pass the night, might try it at 1.39V.

EDIT 2: So, after 4 hour of Prime95, the last overclock "seems" stable, will run it for a while. Will try BF3 later, as it seems to point me to all my hardware problems smile.gif Here's what I've got:

The way Ive always applied the paste is to use a credit card or something and spread it over the top of the CPU. I get it to where it covers the entire top of the processor but also as thin as possible. This is the way that has worked best for me. 57 is a little higher than Id want to run during stress testing. A little too close to the max safe temp.

I cant remember off the top of my head what my NB voltage is. AI Suite says its 1.3 but I couldve sworn I had it at 1.25.

The way I did it was left the NB at stock settings and just overclocked the CPU core. When I found its limits, thats when I turned my attention to the NB. Thats a lot easier because that way you know whats limiting you between the NB and core clock and dont have to guess.

Ok, thank, the 1.452V is getting me near 59C. For now, it seems to work well with my overclock, will try to reapply the paste better to reduce temp.
Thank you for your time!

Agreed. That might be a good thing to upgrade. Wont make a huge difference but should still be worth a coupe degrees.

No, but planning to buy 2 spectre pro monday for my case, will put a spare fan on the heatsink, you think it will get a couple degree by doing a push/pull?

Wich fan would be better on the heatsink, a CoolerMaster R4 (blue LED) or a Gelid Wing (3pin - UV Blue)?

I have an Evo sitting on top of my 960T. I used AS5 and what I did is tinted the surface of the Evo then applied about a pea sized dot to the center of the CPU (Don't spread it). Then just make sure you set the Evo on the CPU as squarely as possible. My temps are 35º idle 47º on Prime95. These temps are the same with x4 and x6.

If you want to add a fan for push/pull, it's best if both fans are the same. You should be able to find the stock fan for the Evo somewhere online, or you should just order 2 new 4 pin fans. If you aren't gonna use the 2 of the exact same fan, you should at least try to match the rpm and CFM. At least thats what I heard. tongue.gif

Wow, thank about the two fan push/pull tip, just put a R4 on my heatsink, now 56C in Prime95 and 30C idle
Will redo my thermal paste application and it should be good to run a long time.

Might be a good idea, I'll try to check for the same fan. Either way, the CM R4 seems to do its job for now smile.gif

So, after a good 6 hour (with a pause of ~10m to install the 2nd fan) of Prime95, here are my results: Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

Sorry about Overdrive being in french, but should be the same as the english one.

Thank alot for all the tips, I'm pretty happy with the performance boost thumb.gif
