H50 on VGA, versus air coolers

Thread Starter
Lots of people sell their Antecs and Corsair coolers around here on Craigslist (large city).

For $30-50, would one of these outperform a performance VGA cooler? I bet an H80 or better would do it but I want a cost benefit.

All I have in mind are: H50, H70 or Kuhler 620---compared to a Gelid Icy, Dracula, Accelero, etc.

They arent realy made for GPU's. They can be moded to fit, but you would still ned heatsinks for your VRM,s and memody(those would need to be glued on using thermal glue). You cannot mount the stock cooler again after this operation and therefore rendering the cards compatability with other cooling solutions useless(or lets just say that its a one way ticket to hell).

If you are still willing to risk it i think there is a thread in this forum somewhere for corsair, antec, etc. modders.

just do it properly from the start, you'll probably end up spending the same amount of money either way

You don't want a closed loop cooler if you can use a quality air-cooler. The H50 is a thermally inefficient, expensive, noisy CLC and it has the very real water-leak liability that destroy hundreds of dollars in PC hardware. If these deficiencies do not bother you, then you can try to cobble the H50 on to a VGA card. FWIW, the H50 is even worse than the H60.

I'm aware of the CLC VGA mods, hence this thread. They look easy as can be. biggrin.gif

Used or discount air coolers aren't as easy to find here right now and I just don't want to pay $50-90 new. And I haven't seen an H50 on VGA yet.

My fan collection has been growing, so I would easily be able to replace stock fans with a couple of nice ones.

check out that thread, great info on it and with reference cards you can keep the stock unisink on and it keeps the VRMs cool and you can return the card to stock.

I got Dwood's bracket for an H60, but I do plan on modding that corsair cooler to use better/longer hoses made of a better material (like neoprene tubing or even PVC).
I could link you guys to a guide on how to mod the Antec Kuhler and the H60, but it's all in portuguese blabber.
