New title : Can the Lenovo IdeaPad Y480 be a bigger disappointment than it is now? - Page 3

well, Y480 wouldnt have looked so bad if there wasn't the 470p right next to it. Now it just looks like an idiot.

It isn't about 640M being bad on its own(it kind of is, comparing to 7690M and if you factor in the waiting time), it's about us expecting something else, something better. Well, at least for the people that read the ad on their website and actually believed it

now, the new laptop is $200 more expensive with close to no graphical performance growth from the 7690M. 470p was in the same league as the last gen M14x, this y480 can no longer compare to the new M14x.

I kind of figured it might have something to do with the heat and all that, I just expected lenovo to know better when they announce the model, roughly 1~2 months before before they sell this.

Giving ppl expectations and failing to deliver completely isn't cool. 640M wasn't even mentioned in the "coming soon" specs on the site, that's how bad they did it this time.

Whatever AMD card they end up using, I just hope it wont be the worst one in a certain arch lol....at least 7770M.....I can dream cant i redface.gif

backlit keyboard is certainly a cool feature, but I am really hoping lenovo could make a comeback in terms of graphic performance

It will still smoke the 7690m in the Y470p and any GT 555m. I think it is a fantastic laptop. My 555m can overclock from 750MHz to over 900MHz, I would not be surprised if that 640m can be bumped up to 650m speeds. The only real issue I see is that it is GDDR3. Still, I love my Y570 and think the design of the Y480 looks amazing, especially the bushed metal look.

The 640M is not only underclocked but it has cores disabled. And the DDR3 is a pretty significant letdown...GDDR5 is a huge improvement, especially on a 128-bit bus. Having said that, the benchmarks I'm seeing aren't bad for a 14" laptop. I can see why they didn't bother to add anything more powerful.

I like notebookcheck's benchmarks and such. Most of it is done with a DDR3 version, but it is clocked at 709 MHz, which I think is higher than the lenovo version. You can get playable frames on high in Skyrim and Medium in BF3, that's pretty good for a laptop.

That is what I mean, the benchmarks I see there, it clearly shows the 640m is significantly faster than the 7690m. Look at those 3D11 scores: 1831 and 1731 for the GPU. The max I see for the 7690m is 1338 and 1141. My overclocked 555m only gets 1428 in 3D11. Its Vantage score is nearly a thousand higher than my 555m and the 7690m. Not only that, its power usage is a lot less, more in line with a GT525m.

obviously the 640M is better, i dont think they would actually have the balls to *update* a model to have inferior performance

but its not as much as you might think

7690m : 1346
640m : 1731

if you click into the spec used for the bench, the 7690M was stock, the 640M was slightly overclocked (a bit less than +100MHz)

you bring 640M back to stock, and it is gonna get a score of 15xx

improvement? yes.
big improvement? no.

$200, or more than 25% the money worth of improvement from the Y470p? HELL NO.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the 640m in the y480 is actually the 640m LE, which is significantly slower.

lol

where did you get that info?

does that mean that the benchmarks we've been looking at are all invalid?

OK there is definitely some confusion going around. I did some searching and it does appear to be a 640M LE. On the spec sheets it lists it as having 1 or 2GB GDDR5. Looking at this review of the Y480 we see that it has been confirmed to be a 640M LE HOWEVER note this:
Quote:
This GPU is not using the new Nvidia Kepler architecture, but rather the old Fermi. The 640M in the Lenovo Y480 will therefore disappoint some users as it’s about on par with last years graphics card releases, such as the AMD 7690M and Nvidia GT 555M that came in the Y470. Later on in the year Lenovo should have configurations of the Y480 available with the faster Nvidia 650M or 660M graphics cards, but at this time those are not an option.
Also quoting from notebookcheck:
Quote:
Watch out: Following rumors, there will also be a Fermi-based version (96 shaders, 762 MHz, DDR3/GDDR5, similar to 550M/555M) with a probably higher power consumption than the Kepler variant.
What this really means that it is actually the SAME GPU as in the Y570. The 550M in the Y470 was DDR3, but the Y570's 555M has GDDR5 making it a bit faster. So seeing as the spec sheet claims GDDR5, it is the GPU from the Y570.

Whew, OK I am dissapointed now. Sorry I was unaware of this.

There is some speculation as to if the 2GB LE is the full 384 shader version and the 1GB is the Fermi card. The review site I linked definitely has a 1GB Fermi 96 core GT555M.

It's a shame. I was looking at getting this laptop if it happened to be any good. The sad part is that there's nothing in the 13" to 14" range that I can find that's more powerful than the 470p.
