i am trying to power 2 gtx 480s need help!!

Thread Starter
i am on a $100 usd budget right now, and i need a psu that can handle my 125w phenom 2 X6 and 2 480s in sli, with minimal overclocking, now after looking at psu's ive noticed that brand name 750s and off brand 850s are almost the same for output specks, which psu would be better??

You're going to need close to 1000 watts for that setup.

I put my dual 480 system on a watt meter (overclocked 480's mind you), and it pulled 870W from the wall while simultaneously running Fur and Prime, so if you factor in efficiency, the components were only pulling ~720W from the PSU

Edit: I would get whatever has the most amperage on the 12V rail.

gtx 480 sli consume 600w of power at base clock.

I burned through 2 Corsair HX850w PSU's powering 2 overclocked 480's and an i7 2600k at 4.8GHz. I got the PSU dirt cheap, around $129 with some super deals on Newegg, but was upgraded for free to an HX1050w after the second 850 burned out. If there was every a part to NOT cheap out on, it's your PSU. Run a single card for now and save up. Trust me. I tried a 4 12v rail 850w Thermaltake Toughpower and a Thermaltake Black Widow 850w, neither of which could handle them. Every time I tried OCCT PSU test, my system would immediately shut down.

So, none of those PSU's will get you very far.

1k watts run mine fine

You might be able to do a 800 watt. In fact i know a few people who do and do just fine. Then again I also know a few people who haven't managed it without blowing their PSU's.

SLI zone says 1k watts. Anything less will be luck of the draw.

However if you DONT OC you will likely be ok. The moment you OC those 480's though their power consumption goes off the grid.

If you want to stay at 100 bucks I would go with this power supply to give you enough juice. It's 99 after rebate.

I would stay away from anything under, realistically, 900w. I know you don't want to hear that, but I went over a month without a PC because my system raped an 850w, and a very excellent 850w PSU at that. Just trying to spare you the hassle I had to go through.
