Need help with overclocking 6990

Thread Starter
Hey guys I'm new to this website really love it! Im new to overclocking and trying my best. I used google for all my answers and now im having some problems that I can't solve with google search frown.gif I'm currently having problems with overclocking my Sapphire 6990.
I used the video card Bios switch, moved it to 1 which is the overclock voltage to 1.175. Moved the GPU Clock to 900MHz and Memory Clock to 1300. Whenever I play a game (Like Battlefield 3) I keep getting Blue Screen. Now I'm wondering do I need to increase anything in the motherboard Bios? Because I'm pretty sure its the voltage.
I recently checked my motherboard bios settings and this is what i got for voltage:
IOH Voltage: 1.111
IOH PCIE Voltage: 1.508
ICH Voltage: 1.111
ICH PCIE: Voltage: Blank

Do I need to increase any of these ^, Currently everything is on Auto.

You shouldn't need to change anything in the BIOS. It won't affect the stability of the GPU. If I had to guess I would say that your card just doesn't like those clocks. If you want to overclock, take it in small 20MHz increments, then test it, then add another 20, and do it first for the GPU, then once you've sorted that out, set it back to stock and fiddle with the memory.

Then when you know the max for both you'll need to find a compromise that will suit both of them.

Also: what is the BSOD code that you're getting?

http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html I recommend using this to view the BSOD code and info. Just post the filename that had the issue, that should tell us if it was the video drivers or not! thumb.gif

It could be because ULPS. Try to disable that.

I thought ULPS was only an issue for the 7 series cards? I never had a problem with my 6950s when I had them. Correct me if I'm wrong though!

As far as i know, there was problem with ULPS if you engage overclocking HD 6990.
Here is the link that talks about that: http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/ASUS/Radeon_HD_6990/26.html
Here is one quote for review.

In order to successfully do manual overclocking, one has to disable AMD's ULPS power saving technology, otherwise the overclocking attempts quickly end with a Windows Bluescreen

I stand corrected! It must only have been in certain conditions the ULPS worked, I guess one of those was on the 6990!
