Second 580GTX

Thread Starter
I know there are plenty of forums on this topic but most are pre - 680 release.

I currently have a single GTX580 which is great for 1920x1080. I have just ordered a Dell UltraSharp U2711 so with the resolution bump i want to know if its worth going to SLI? Mainly play BF3 and Crysis 2, from what i have read the later will take the biggest hit.

Case/Power in sig.

Cheers

Honestly, I like sticking with the best single card solution. So I'd go with a GTX 680 or a HD7970 personally. I've got a 7970 and I run 2560x1600 (should be comparable to what you want to do). And there's not one game I cannot max out with the one exception being Metro2033.

My opinion I am with Pioneer. I have run Crossfire 6950's unlocked & 560 ti's and hated every minute of both. Went with a single 580 and never been happier. Will never go back to crossfire/sli again

I am the exact opposite of the two above. I will never go single GPU if I can help it. wink.gif

Worthiness and value are all relative. With that said, I would hold off on the second GPU and wait until your monitor actually comes in. If your GPU performance is not up to your expectations, then definitely take the plunge for the second card. thumb.gif

Its been along time since i have run SLI/Crossfire (7800's and then crossfire in an M17X)

I'm guessing two 580GTX will out peform a single 680GTX but it seems both are out of stock around my area (680 is a given but perhaps theres alot of people picking up the 580 while there cheap)

covert ash i notice you have the a very similar setup, how do you find performance on say Crysis 2?
At 1920x1080 DX11 high res textures its not as smooth as i had hoped, although BF3 was fine with the single card.

If i go down the SLI route i would want to maxing out games or as close to it until the next line (780GTX??) and then go single card again.

Having recently upgraded to the 3930K (and running at stock too) from an overclocked 4.2GHz i7 930, I can actually maintain framerates well above 60 fps (typically in the 80s-90s) even when the action gets hot in Crysis 2 using the full DX11/texture pack at 1920x1200. With my 930, even though it was overclocked, it actually had noticeable dips here and there, using the same 580's. For 1080p resolution, the SLI 580 setup will be quite overkill, however, I think for 1440p/1600p it is just right. thumb.gif

Surround on the other hand, that is a whole different beast altogether...

You'll be fine on a U2711 with 2 580s, are they 1.5GB versions? If not you'll still get good fps (I get 85+ fps on Ultra settings in BF3 no AA) you just may not be able to crank up the AA, but I don't notice that much of a visual difference.

I can also max out Shogun 2 and any game I play, the AA just needs to stay low/off.
