Yeah at that rez and everything running on Ultra. It's almost an guarantee you'll use 1.2GB+. I'm at 1920x1200 and I touch 1.31GB-1.46GB depending on the map. "Maybe" the GTX 480 might be the better option. But I don't know how much of a performance hit you'll take from a 300MB VRAM loss.

Welcome to OCN! My 570 has been amazing with OCing to 1GHz. I will say the 570 is quieter, has a lower power draw, just a tad pricier, and overall a better performer. I play all my games at 1920x1200P @ Ultra settings and I have yet to dip below 60 with the exception of a hundred things exploding at once or 500 NPCs randomly spawning. My vote stays with the 570. Even though the 480 heatsink looks very sexy.

If you can get your E8400 to 4ghz it wouldn't be so bad, but its still only a dual core. If you had a Q9550 you could pick up for next to nothing then that will also work pretty well at 4ghz. But for overall convenience the i3 will do vary well, though if you want a 2500k would be the best thing to get as you could always sli later on. As far as SLI goes on the GTX480, if its anything like my gtx470 setup the SLI made a huge increase. Near double the frame rate in most games and the plus of running more AA. If you ever go dual cards in the future the gtx480's make a killer sli configuration. But your room will pretty warm while playing games. thumb.gif

Go with a i3 and a single gtx480
or
get a i5 2500k and have the options to run two gtx480's?

But haswell is coming out in a year and i'm sure one could hold off with a single gtx480 till then. Buy the time haswell is out, big daddy kepler and HD8900 will be out.

I gotta say.. the 480 can be fast but I would agree with the things you said about the 570. Besides, the deal on the 480 is ending soon and will be back to $300. I would take the 570 in a second if I were to be looking at a $300 480 and $270 570. But if I were to take the 570 and run BF3 on ultra on one monitor @ 1920x1080.. would it really use up the whole 1.2GB it has? The 2.5GB version is $340 here. Would it be worth it?

And as for my CPU, would you recommend me wait until I get enough for an i5 or wait for Ivy? I, for some reason, am not excited for Ivy. Most of the things i have been hearing is that it is the same as the 2500k with just a little better cooling on it. But those are just rumors and I guess I will have to wait and see.

Since I have decided on the 570, will the price drop again when the new 6xx comes out? I was thinking of getting it right now (my parents would lend me the extra $70) or just wait until the new series comes out and hopefully the price drops..

You'd most likely want an i5 2500K with that. Ivy requires quite a bit of cooling for moderate OC's that we'd expect. They've dropped the prices on the 570;s so much and yes BF3 will use up all that VRAM on the 1.2GB. I don't know the exact launch date of the GTX 6xx series but if its soon then I'd say wait for some price drops.

Buy used. Why would you spend that much for a 570? Or a 480 for that matter?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/EVGA-GeForce-GTX-480-1-5GB-SUPERCLOCKED-1536MB-015-P3-1482-AR-WORKING-GREAT-/110865588808?pt=PCC_Video_TV_Cards&hash=item19d01aa248

Get a 480, overclock it a bit. Best bang for the buck right now. Can also pick up a cheap Core 2 Quad chip and overclock the hell out of it. Bam. BF3 boom boom time.

Why would you spend that much on a 480 from Ebay and why would you want a C2Q when Sandy bridge is so cheap for the performance?

No thanks.

And I currently see 6 votes with most of them going to the 2.5, can you just explain to me why? Everyone I hear different stories of whether BF3 uses all 1.2GB on ultra running 1920x1080. If I lower my settings or just changed the res would it decreases it? I mean I like the 470 but paying 340 for 2.5 compared to 270 for 1.2..

you will be fine with the 1.25gb, I know as I play on ultra and get zero frame drops. I can play on 2x msaa but a couple of the big maps can cause frame drops at random at times, but it doesnt happen vary often or even at all some matches. I play on a 120hz monitor and I already avg 90-120fps with MSAA off, so i'm happy with that. The GTX480 with the 1.5gb will handle 2x and 4x MSAA better then the gtx570 1.25gb.
