H100 Thermal Compound

I need to take my H100 off for a little while, when I put it back on what is a recommended thermal compound to use on it? I have a tube of Arctic Cooling MX-3 but I don't think it's good anymore, it's a couple of years old.

Most of the time I either use AS5 or even the Noctua stuff since I've got a few tubes of it. IMO it doesn't make that big of a difference what you use as long as you apply it right and aren't trying to squeeze every 1 degree out of your system. But this is OCN afterall where each degree counts.

TIM really doesn't go bad, you'll fine fine using that if that's all you have. Just turn the tube upside down for a little while. I have a tube of MX-2 or AS5 usually, but when I have some money laying around I try to get some Shin Etsu.

To be honest, the difference between thermal pastes is really negligible, in my opinion. The thing that's most important is really the application method and whether or not you did it right.

Do you want cheap or great? If you want great, grab some Phobya HeGrease or Prolimatech PK-1. If you want something good, but cheap, grab some G751 Shin Etsu or a one use pack of PK1.

Thermal compound that comes with from factory is ShinEtsu X23. Why change?

He stated he needs to remove the cooler for a little while, and putting the cooler back on after removing it without reapplying TIM is bad news bears.

It's actually a Dow Corning TIM made for the H100. The last gen H50 and H70 were supposed to use Shin Etsu.
