Looks like they put an LED in each room...each light is pointing upward toward the window. That made it pretty obvious it wasn't really "a hack"...I think the article kinda tries to oversell it and doubt there's anything "sneaky" going on at all. Likely just a side project for a few students for a bit of fun, otherwise they wouldn't have gotten access to every room to install the lights and network for it. Really cool to see the building playing tetris though, just that in general is awesome...I don't know why they'd have to come up with some shotty story line to add to it.
