ULTRA *cheap* HTPC

Thread Starter
Right, decided to build a HTPC. I'm buying the cheapest possible parts for a i3 based 2TB system.

450
Click for Specs (Click to show)
This is the locked spec. I won't be changing it. Just to see what OCN thinks. biggrin.gif

CPU: Intel Celeron G440
RAM: 2x 2GB AMD Entertainment Edition CL9 1600Mhz
SSD: OCZ Petrol 64GB
HDD: Western Digital Scorpio Blue 500GB, Seagate 320GB (Both are 2.5" drives)
ODD: LG Bluray DVDRW
MoBo: MSI H61-E35
Case: SMARTTECK Mini-ITX Cube ST-A9089
CPU Cooler: Stock Intel
Fans: 80mm Noiseblocker M8-S1
PSU: OEM 150W ITX Case-included PSU
Other: ASRock PCI-E x1 SATA6G, Akasa Soundproofing, TP-Link Gigabit 5 port switch.
OS: Windows 7 Professional 64 Bit.

What I was looking for..
Motherboard with 4 SATA ports and Gigabit port.
Case that matched the style of a Corsair 600T White.
PCI-E x1 port.

What I'll be doing with the build..
Mini media server, basically. Stick all my music, movies, photos, etc on it.
Decided to make the build because I want my gaming PC to be silent, or near as can be.
Using as Server PC only. G440 is useless for anything else.

Modding the case...
Spray rear of the case black.
That's it.

Cost..
€313

Photos..

Fairly basic looking ITX case. But I have plans for it. Comes with a mind blowing power supply of 150 Watts drool.gif

450
The finish on the front plastic looks very good. Matches the steel panel colour very well.

450
Removed the front. Ready for spraying, almost.

450
All taped up. Professional as always. rolleyes.gif

450
Sprayed.

450
Fitted the Akasa silencing foam. The pack said it would fit a single tower PC. But I have enough to do the 600T also. biggrin.gif

450
Put the foam on the PSU too.

450
Finished fitting the foam. I went over board with fitting the foam as I need this rig to be silent.

450
Fitted the new fan. The stock one was whiny and horrible. Tested the new one, it is completely silent.

450
Looking good beside the main rig.

More photos to follow as I get the parts. Rig should be done by the end of next month. Any ideas for asthetics are welcome. But not for hardware.

New stuff arrived a day ago, all in the tiny case... so here's more photos thumb.gif

All that's left to get..

It's about $650 US. I pay a premium because of shipping and lack of sources to buy from. It's really cheap compared to my gaming PC though. tongue.gif

Yeah, It's not the cheapest in the world. I was going to go for the absolute basics of a 1155 Celeron and a 1TB drive and 1Gb ram. It would have knocked about 200 off the price. But I want my first HTPC to be decent. smile.gif

I'm actually thinking of fitting a Corsair H100 into it. Depends how big the case is when it arrives. Might turn this PC into a little modding box. thumb.gif

I'd look at the i3-2125 instead of the 2100..it's an upgrade of the graphics from intel HD2000 to HD3000...if you are going to be playing HD media, you will want it. Only a 23 euro price difference.

personally i would get an amd apu, cheaper.

i would also just get a foxconn bookshelf system, for about $250 (USD), you can put together a nice little xbmc box.
