Help deciding on SSD laptop vs Faster CPU

Thread Starter
Getting my dad a 17" laptop as a gift. He uses his laptop mainly to watch videos and browse the internet. I narrowed it between an Toshiba w/a Intel Dual-Core B960, 4GB RAM, and a Crucial M4 128GB SSD (i'm dropping it in myself),

or an HP w/an A6-3400m with 4GB RAM, and a 5400 RPM Hard Drive.

Both are going to end up costing the same. I personally think the slower Intel w/a Crucial M4 is going to run faster than the A6.

I would go with the slower cpu / SSD combo. An SSD can make a P4 feel fast tongue.gif
post #3 of 10
The SSD will more than make up for the slower CPU. The CPU should be more than enough for your dad's uses, while still being able to fly.

You will see performance increase more with the SSD over the CPU. That's true in almost any case. Load times will be much better. Especially seeing as he isn't doing much cpu intensive work on there.

SSD!! You don't realize what a bottleneck the hard drive is until you've used an SSD. I guarantee you an SSD will improve your dad's user experience more than a faster CPU. For my laptop I decided to go with an i3 instead of a more expensive i5 and use the savings for an SSD. It was definitely the right thing to do. Photoshop opens in less than 5 seconds! I love it.

Well, back to the drawing board. Aparently, the Toshiba with the Intel B960 has crap sound, only 2 usb ports, and no HDMI. So, the next best thing is an HP with an A4-3305m. I still think putting an SSD in here would make it faster than an A6-3000m. The only problem is that I've noticed laptop CPUs can be slow (especially AMD ones). I mean, the A4-3305m is slower than my old laptop with an Intel P8600 that I bought in 2008! Maybe I should get him the A6, and upgrade is Hard Drive to an SSD next year.

Looking to pay up to $500, but the HP w/the A4-3305m and SSD will cost $480 ($380 for laptop + $130 for Crucial M4 - $30 for selling HD).
